Default How long should FE2 Shocks last?

Just got a call from my mechanic saying that the shocks are on the way out and should be replaced. The car is 04 SS, with 92,000km on it. Has anyone else had to replace shocks, how long should shocks last?

Shocks tend to degrade progressively, and it depends a lot on how the car is driven and on what surfaces.

There isn't a hard and fast schedule like there is with oil, but it's quite possible that at 92,000 they are about due.

If you want a 2nd opinion you can take it to places like Pedders who do their "$14 28 point check" who will tell you the condition of your shocks (from memory they give you a print out with nice graphs on), or for a more simple test, park your car on a flat surface, then get out and push down on each corner of the car as hard as you can (the car body should move downwards), then quickly let go and the car will bounce back, if it bounces back more than once (ie up and down a bit) then they probably need doing.

If you take it to Pedders then I guarantee you that the "shocks are well and truly buggered". Bunch of liars. I'm speaking generally, there might actually be a truthful Pedders out there.

Shockies only have an effective life of 40 000kms, according to Monroe, but I have found this to be pretty close. As said, shocks wear progressively and driving the car all the time you don't tend to notice them wearing. Fit a new set and you will feel the difference instantly.

I agree on getting them replaced, imagine how many bumps they have taken care of over the 90k ?

If you let them go they can cause further problems for your suspension...

Lowering just opens up a world of issues on a street car - simply not worth it IMO. VZ's look fine at stock height.

Depends which shocks are worn, front & rear or just the front or just the rear.
My rear ones need changing but my front ones are fine.

Monroe GT Gas, set me back $160 a pair for the rears.

I would definitely do them in pairs (ie. both fronts, or both rears), if not all 4 at once.

If the fronts have done 92 000 kms so have the rears, replace them all.
