VY clutch slave cylinder (V8)

VY 5.7 clutch slave cylinder is leaking fluid. I'm told this is a gearbox out job.
This is the last straw with this car, I can't afford to own the thing anymore.
I'm on a first name basis with the local dealer spare parts guys and the service dept.
Anyway..with that off my chest, how long would you normally expect the slave cylinder to last and is it a serviceable item?
If box is coming out, I guess at 175,00 kms the clutch may as well be replaced too?

the slave cyllinder has to be done with the gear x out its around the $240 mark with a new bearing and just get them to look at the clutch while its out it might be ok
