    Default VZ Flute Placement??!!

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone out there with a VZ SS, or similar, would be abe to do me a huge favour??

I have bought a set of VZ SS flutes of Holmart, recieved them today, but before I hack into my gaurds, just wondering on the placement -

How far up the gaurd does the bottom of the flute start, from the body line/trolley strip protector and
How far from the front door gap does the rear side of the vent start,

    Does that make sense?!

Im guessing most of the flutes would be similar if not the same shape, so just those two measurements would be really helpful in placing them close to, if not, in the right spot...

Cheers to anyone that can helpme out!

    Josh,

just a suggestion..would it be cheaper and easier to buy 2nd hand guards off ebay and get them painted..they are going for cheap enough these days?

    cheaper - no...
    easier - yes...

It cost $20 for fibre glass, and over $100 for 1 gaurd, soo.. a bit of a saving there, and I am going to 'smooth' the outer line on the flutes, to neaten it up anyway, so to me fibre glass was the better option..

Thanks for the suggestion, but all I need are those measurements,

Looks like a trip to Holden, with a tape measure is on the cards in the near future...

LMAO, yeah, I was trying to avoid that eyy!
Had that same thought in my head when writing it, lol...

I'll probly end up guessing, just get a close up photo from somewhere, and match it by eye, then measure it and transfer to the other side..

    ahahhh!!

LEGEND danja, thats exactly what I need!

Ive got the same ones, does the black bit in the middle on yours pop out?? mine is just one piece?

That outside line - what seperates the flute from the gaurd, I plan to fill in, fibreglass smooth, aswell as fibreglassing the back really heavily, to try and give it some strength, maybe leave a bit of metal on my old gaurd, to try and get one or two of the clips in...

Thanks again, danja, saved me an interesting trip to Holden with my tape!!

Is the 50mm one, from the top of the body line, or the bottom?? it kinda looks like the bottom? but not too sure?

Thanks again, now they will be in the right spot!!

And the VE's stockos, have a similar style flute, but with the longer indicator.. all smooth into the flute, like what I want to do!

No idea sorry, they are the genuine ones that come with the car, I haven't tried to dismantle them.

Its from the bottom of the recessed part. I'd use the other two measurements, they are more precise. I'm surprised the kit didn't come with a template actually to help you cut the hole!

Ahh cool, will use the other two meausrements then, and just use that as another check point...

Probly if I got the 'weld in' pieces that go into your gaurd, that should come with a template, but I just bought the raw flutes, with flashers and looms, they were only $88 each (complete) with $22 postage upto the coast, from melbourne, so resonable...
The weld in bits are $330 each, I think, so like Escape-The-Fate said, its easier just to buy new gaurds - if you want the line around them, like stock,

    Cheers!!

This is a definite candidate for the "how to" section, with lots of pics. Better take plenty and post them all.

Well heres todays efforts, got the passenger one just about sorted...
Theres just a few little imperfections, but I'm going to fit it back onto the car - to make sure its flat, and all sweet, then fix it right up..

Will get onto a DIY thread for it, got a few photos, probly should've taken a few more, lol, but will when I do the other side, i'll write it up, with what I've got so far then just add to it as I get some new pics...

When I was marking it up, it looked like the top was tilted down a little, so I angled it up, but looking a your one (danga's) it looks like it sort of does a little?? hope mines straight! lol thats how its staying anyway!

Finished it at around 9.30pm, had it drying under heat lamps, lol...

Thanks again danga for you measurements!!

Sure looks like it's coming along!

I think it does angle down slightly. The important part is that the chrome strip is parallel with the trolley strip and the ground, the surround will blend in with the paint.

Are you going to do the grill body coloured, or black?

Lol, I hope its straight, haha I fitted it back onto the car this morning, it looks to be straight - with the trolley strip, if it is out, it can't be by much!

Umm, probly black in the grill area, but seeing it all one colour, blue might be ok - blend it all in together?

Same mate! im keen as to get some colour on there, but im not sure whether to do a slightly different than stock paint job, either a pearl in with it, or a slightly different blue.. lighter or darker? or a metal flake??!! ahh the decisions...

I definitely like this mod, and particularly think that by filling in the gaps around the insert, they look like part of the original panel rather than a separate part. To me, that is an improvement on the factory design. Can you make sure your pics for the other guard show the cut-out in the guard before the insert is added, and some progressive shots during the process?

Looking terrific mate - keep it up.

    Hey Calaber,
Thanks heaps, its good to know you like them as much as me!
I do have a few pics of the 'during the process' but a few more might clear up any confusion on a couple of steps, the fibre glassing, and cutting bending the metal, I have a before shot, where its marked, and an after shot, after its cut out, but not showing how to 'bend' the edges back over, etc..

I am still going to do a DIY thread, might get onto it now, I just threw those pics in there so a couple of you could see what it looks like for now..

I need to save my pennies for some paint now!!
    Cheers again!

+1 for How to thread. Awesome mod! (How rare is it for an Acclaim in that colour? thought that was only an SS colour....)

OK guys, got the 'HOW TO' sussed, just needs to be approved by a moderator. And most likely re-written, lol.

I will get a few more photos 'during' when I do the drivers side one!

If it something needs to be added to it, or changed that you can see, let me know, it will probly take a couple of days to get it all sorted. and if I remember anything else!!

Cheers STEALTHY, it should be up in the morning for you to check out..! beware spelling and grammar mistakes, lol, my eyes hurt, it took over an hour to just do that. I will re-work it later on. After its approved.

umm, yeahh my cars an SS too, did I say Acclaim??!! lol, Its not the impulse blue, like the VZ's I think? Its called Delft Blue - sort of darkish, with what looks to be a bit of a purple pearl through it, in some light. Ive seen one other up here, I think its a berlina but?..
