Cleaning MAF

Hi Guys,

Have been reading a bit about MAF cleaning lately. The MAF described in the threads didn't match that of my VZ Commodore Alloytec.

It didn't have the 3 exposed wires running down the middle as explained just a small round plastic grate in the centre of a larger one (When looking down the centre of the intake piping section).

I sprayed it all with carb cleaner anyway, then sprayed it with compressed air. Was this right? IS there another way I should be doing it?

No idea what the inside of a Alloytec MAF looks like or how to get to it, but I wouldn't have used carby cleaner.

Suggest using electrical contact cleaner next time, much less harsh. Try and find a "plastic safe" version (or use a specialised MAF cleaner spray, which is pretty much the same thing).

Contact cleaner is the way to go as carby cleaner is a harsher solvent, but leaves a residue, where as contact cleaner doesn't.

dont worry about the maf, take off your thottle body and clean that should be full of oil and sh1t

Yeah I did clean my Throttle body and yes it was filthy.

Hmm so have I potentially done more harm than good cleaning my MAF with Carby cleaner??? I guess I'll see I'm driving from Melbourne to Adelaide and back this weekend!

Not necessarily, you will soon know if you have damaged it.

There is specific MAF cleaner available.
But the general consenus seems to be it
is the same as electrical contact cleaner.

there is a MAF cleaner that a shop in Newman (north west WA) use on our Patrols, and apparently it is different and better contact cleaner. The guy can't remember what it was though as his mechanic in the workshop threw it out when it was empty.

I've got some CRC MAF cleaner, and also CRC contact cleaner. While I haven't put them both through a mass spectrometer, superficially they look the same, smell the same, and for all intents and purposes work the same. Only difference I could tell was that the MAF cleaner cost the same for a can half the size
