Has anybody just upgraded the headunit in their VZ Calais and run the stock speakers?
The reason I ask is, I've done just that and....well....I swear it sounded better with the stock headunit. The headunit I've installed is an Alpine IVA-W502EV, so it's a top unit. I've tried to tune it as best I can but I just can't seem to get what I would call 'good sound' out of it.
"VZ Calais and run the stock speakers?"
there just nasty paper cones rated 15Watts
get rid of them for some decent splits
your new HU is too good for them (power wise 50W x 4 High Power Amp included)
overpowering the crap out of em IMO

i found when i originally exchanged the stock stereo for a pioneer deh9650mp, it made a considerable audio quality difference.
But then it didn't take me long after that to gut the rest of the stereo from the car for some splits and subs

Like ya stole it!
I think the audiophiles will always tell you to replace the speakers first, then the head unit, not the other way round. It can often be a lot cheaper and certainly more rewarding.
i find that changing my headunit improved the sound coming out of my stock VZ Calais speakers.

maby bass is up too much i usally set for an avreage bass +2 treb +6/+8 (this is on scale of -10 to +10)
Most are 4 x 50W actually. If you are on a tight budget, then upgraded heaunit with better speakers will sound 100 times better than stock, but tend to agree with vn6pwr that you may as well amp a decent set of splits.
