Default VZ Calais - Aftermarket headunit with stock speakers

Has anybody just upgraded the headunit in their VZ Calais and run the stock speakers?

The reason I ask is, I've done just that and....well....I swear it sounded better with the stock headunit. The headunit I've installed is an Alpine IVA-W502EV, so it's a top unit. I've tried to tune it as best I can but I just can't seem to get what I would call 'good sound' out of it.

i found when i originally exchanged the stock stereo for a pioneer deh9650mp, it made a considerable audio quality difference.
But then it didn't take me long after that to gut the rest of the stereo from the car for some splits and subs
    Drive it

You mean it improved the audio quality, or it made it worse (which is what I have found)?

I think the audiophiles will always tell you to replace the speakers first, then the head unit, not the other way round. It can often be a lot cheaper and certainly more rewarding.

i find that changing my headunit improved the sound coming out of my stock VZ Calais speakers.

Aftermarket headunits are only about 15-20wrms, so actually not overpowering stock speakers at all.. I'd only be getting decent splits if I was getting an amp to run them.

Most are 4 x 50W actually. If you are on a tight budget, then upgraded heaunit with better speakers will sound 100 times better than stock, but tend to agree with vn6pwr that you may as well amp a decent set of splits.

They are marketed as 4x50w but this is a max figure realistically its only 15-20 watts RMS. Much like speakers can be marketed as 400watts max yet only are only rated at a nominal wattage of say 60w
