Hi Guys
Iam in the process of selling my car and have been contacted by interstate buyers from Vic and Qld, is there anything extra I need to do to sell the car for example a RWC and if so how much does it cost? Is there anything I should be careful of while selling interstate...sorry for the ignorance but I have only sold my previous cars to buyers from NSW..I have tried the search function but couldn't find any useful info..any help is much appreciated..
Please advise if I have posted it in the wrong section...cheers

You don't have to do anything different other than ensure you DON'T GET RIPPED OFF. As per usual you have to notify change of registration etc. The onus is on the buyer to have rego changed to their name and state (if applicable).
there is no obligations by you, except to decide if you wish to transfer registration to the owner. I know victoria for a fact will require a full rwc to be done by the new owner before it is registered on their roads. victoria is very strict, any interstate car, well any car that is registered in victoria must go thru rwc, then registration costs, but that is not your worry, you give them the old rego papers and information plus a full receipt!
thanks guys...so I am presuming the reciept is for the money I have recieved for the car...

Once the sale has been made I would cancel the
registration and return the plates to the RTA.
Inform the buyer of this before sale.
It would then be the purchasers responsibility
to obtain a permit to drive the vehicle on the
road until he or she obtains registration for the
vehicle.
Make sure the funds clear before releasing the
vehicle. And use change of registration documents
as proof of sale. That way you get their full personel
details and drivers licence.
This should protect you should anything go pear-shaped.
I'm not afraid.
mate can I take the plates off the car, sorry but I am a bit confused here but can I sell the car withouht plates..I was just planning to complete registration documents and inform rta of the change of ownership?? coz that's what I did when I sold my previous two cars...I'll take their details anyways....thanks for the help...

you can sell the cars without plates, the new onwer has to organise a permit for him/her to drive it home/rwc centre and will have to organise new plates
Chev badges are an instant fail
Then, effectively, you are selling an unregistered car. It doesn't matter that the car has NSW rego, complete the notice of sale on the back of the papers, hand them in, then it is the buyers responsibility to get the car transferred and rego'd in their state. They can still drive the car until the rego expires. Just leave the plates on it, leave it registered, just make sure you fill in the notice of sale and hand it in.
thanks guys...appreciate all the responses...![]()

if your worried about funds transfering, get them to get a bank cheque..which is as good as cash these days, because the bank checks if the funds are in there account, withdraws them/freezes that amount..prints out a cheque with your full name on it and the teller signs it and so does the bank manager at the branch. only you with full identification can cash that cheque.
Sticking a Chev badge on any Commodore is like putting a Nissan badge on a VL
EOI....VE SS 18" wheels x4 with 5000k's on new tread, 2 of have very minimal gutter rash (previous owner) otherwise like new send me a pm if interested.
If selling to someone in NSW you just sign the back of the rego papers, send your bit to the RTA then the buyer needs to transfer it. If he doesn't and you don't send the notice to the RTA you are liable for any fines, red light camera's etc.
If selling to Interstate I would sell it without rego, remove the plates and cancel the rego you might get a few dollars back. If you let the car go interstate with rego and plates you have a higher risk that they will drive it until the rego runs out as they will have to get the car passed to register it.
I just brought a car from VIC, it had to go through a blue slip in NSW to register it. QLD and VIC probably would be the same, the car will have to pass some RWC check.
We all live in Australia but yet have different licenses and rego in every state that have different rules.
Never give them the car until you have the money - bank cheque, cash or in your bank prior to releasing the car.
