My commodore over heated last thursday when it was hot. Its the first time ever in the 2 years Ive owned it . The alarm went off, pulled out of traffic let it cool down with the engine off and fans running. got home topped up the expansion tank took a little bit.
following day on the way home temp rising again .got home checked for leeks nothing, opened rad cap put in about quater of litre.
rang my mechanic told him the prob taught same as me, Thermostat. Came over Monday evening to cahange it pulled all neccessary parts off to get to the dam thing and finds NO THERMOSTAT???? what the hell .???
Bought the car my06 with 43000 from a holden dealership in nw sydney now has 73000 bloody Holden serviced it for the first year (shifty so and so's) then my Mechanic whom I trust {next door neighbour).
Would a holden Mechanic go to all the trouble to take it out to p[iss a customer off ? Any ideas. !!!!!!!
P.s now it has a thermostat and so far so good.
Thermostat is right at the back of the engine, tucked up above the trans, and they're supposed to last the life of the engine (im guessing thats why they put it in such an inacessible place...)
Not sure how it could function without a thermostat, but if it had...well done on travelling 30,000km without it!![]()
"And i gave that man directions, even though i didn't even know the way; because thats the kinda guy i am today"
i drove for 6 months or so with no coolant wat so ever in my BMW 318i German Engineering at its finiest.. summer came around and i ended up cracking the head...
Suggest you have your cooling system completely cleaned and flush, filled with new (suitable) coolant. Also check/replace thermostat, water pump and all hoses.
And check the Radiator Cap Pressure too. My dealership reckons the VZ's need to have them changed every 3-4 years because they are so unreliable.
yep you will notice on the radiator caps the rubber seal on the base of the cap squeezes out, the base of the cap also breaks the crimp off,

its a cheap fix and good insurance.
And whatever you do, don't go to the same Holden dealer as UminaVZ did for his overheating problem.
Thanks Guys,
Ye are a wealth of Knowledge between ye.
I'll take the advise and change the rad cap to be on the safe side.
So far since put the thermostat in its sitting just above quarter even with a few hot days in Sydney.
and poor UminaVZ my Mechanic only cost $150 including labour , an hour and a half and the new thermostat. I supplyed the coolant. You got Ripped.
