Sorry if this is really obvious for most of you, but I'm gonna have my car serviced at Holden soon and I know they're going to say "you'll need new tyres and we sell them at $250 for two", and I am not sure if they really mean it or just wanna make some easy money.
So how can I tell when I need new tyres? And can someone recommend good brands?
on the tyre tread pattern in the grooves you will see lil bits that are raised, now if them raised bits are the same hight as the rest of the tyre tread, then you need new tyres. as simple as that. inspect all 4 wheels as the front might have diffrent wear to rear tyres.
i run a toyo tyre on my SV6 and after 30-40,000km they still got amount left before replacement.tyres from Holden are overpriced unless they sell them at $250 each with a nice factory mag attached to it.(was offered that before gettn the toyo's)
remember you only get what you pay for , never get tyres thru a dealership as they will charge you a mark up for the help in get tyres fitted which you can have done any tyre outlet . Your tyre dealer should ask some simple question like : do you use the car for towing often , do you drive just around town or alot of highway driving , is the car loaded constantly , whats your driving style slow and cautious or you drive like peter brock , whats your budget ... price is normally the biggest deciding factor why fit a $250 tyre over a $110 , question you should ask the tyre dealer : whats the standard replacement tyre for this car : what advantages will fitting a plus size tyre have : directional or non directional tyre : ride and handling in the wet and dry : recommended tyre pressure :
Most common asked question is how long will it last ,,,, how long is a piece of string is my best answer to that one , but knowing what type of driving they do with there car can help to give you a better idea of how long they might get from that tyre : what else is included in the sale of this tyre/s free rotation after 10000 kms to extend tyre life : any free puncture repairs : discount on a wheel aligment at time of purchase of a set of tyres etc etc . Warranty on the tyres : If buying a tyre you have never heard of is there a clause if you dont like them you can exchange them for something else thats better suited and if theres any charge for exchanging them ????
Just some food for thought ....
strgas, has it spot on...
but... the simple answer is this.
Look at the sidewall of the tyre around the where it meets the tread
you will see a small triangle or arrow.
This triangle points to the tread wear indicator (which is what baracuda is talking about)
now follow the arrow and you will see a raised 'bar' through the deepest parts of the tread.
If any part of that 'bar' is level with the highest parts of the tread then the tyre is not roadworthy.
In all states of Australia you must have 1.5mm of tread depth on all parts of the tyre which contact the road.
this treadwear indicator 'bar' is 1.5mm from the casing of the tyre.
Aswell as the tread wear indicators, you must inspect that your tyres are wearing evenly, that is, the inner edge isnt worn more than the middle and outside edge etc.
You could have a brand new tyre, but the inside edge is worn, which means yep, you need new tyres and to inspect and resolve this issue.
Of course if you have any doubts on your holden dealer, or yourself, take it into a reputable tyre dealer and ask them to have a look and point out things to look for in the future.
It's alot easier to show you what to look for then to say.
the easiest way to determine is if u see sparks out of the rear view mirror and some slight handling issues u have probably waited too long
svsex mate u think exactly like me
if its too loud your too old
This video on youtube (which i've posted the link to) shows how to tell if you need to replace your tyres =) hope it helps!

in terms of brands, has anyone heard of "marangoni" tyres before?
The Marangoni Mythos won the 2007 Motor Magazine Tyre Test>

Brilliant Tyre, closest competitor in terms of brand/lineup/manufacture would be Pirelli. Marangoni made in Italy.
Here's a link to a discussion about them on ls1.com.au (cached) Marangoni Tyres [Archive] - Australian LS1 and Holden Forums
