Hi all,
I have noticed that my wheels (steering) wobbles at and above 80km/h.
I had the wheels balanced as I thought that would be the obvious problem, but no cigar! so I thaught the tyre shop may have not done it properly so I rotated the tyres front to rear, to see if that would help, again no cigar!
Is this a common problem? could all my wheels be out of balance or is it something more serious like front struts/tie rod ends?
Hopefully some one has had a similar problem?
Thanks in advance Matt
Does it move side to side when it is parked? Grab the wheel and try to move it as if you are wiggling it to take it off. Mine did this and needed a full steering column replaced under warranty. Dunno what the problem was, the dude looked at it and said 'Yeah, I don't think it is supposed to do that'.
Your tyres are most likely unevenly worn.
Jack the car up, spin the tyre with ur hand about 2-3mm above it & see if the tyre gets closer or further away from ur hand.
The Blue One
The tyres are brand new thats what gets me! and the rears which are a lot older do the exact same thing.
I was thinking shocks, might have to take it to pedders and have them do the test, perhaps the struts are no longer dampening? however they seem ok when you bounce the car
Just take it in for the 28 pt suspension check!
The Blue One
yeh, lets not get started on pedders 28 point steering and suspension rip off
Take it to a trusted mechanic, someone whose NOT going to rip you off and whose going to actually quote what's wrong.
But to be honest EVERY VZ I've driven (and theres been countless from Exec to SS and in between) have had a wobble of some description. I know on mine, apart from tyre condition, the front hubs have massive play in them which causes a wobble at speed.
Depends on kays too I guess and things wearing out, the Zeds are getting to that age now. Mines needed tyres all round, radius rod bushes, front hubs, shocks all round and Im sure theres more to come![]()
Could be the wheel bearing......... common. If it's under braking then it's the front control arm bushes usually.

Doubt this will help.. but it's handy info![]()
yup thats the castor bushes I needed to do, the genuine gel filled ones just don't cut it
had the same problem took it holden they as usual ripped me off by machining the discs that had already been done 2 months before it ended up being uneven tyre wear and a slight buckle on the inside wall of my mag, had castor bushes (and every other bush replaced) the only wobble thats left is the mag. it is worth while having the bushes replaced
Cheers Beers, yes I wont go to a dealership service center they always look for an easy out and push you back out the door fully knowing you will be back in a week spending more hard earned cash!!! did you do the caster bushes yourself, looks like a straight forward job so will just have to track down a decent genuine Aus made seller here in Adelaide! Dont want any Chinese or Indian stuff on principle!
Hey while we are on a similar subject here guys.......... Did my brakes recently...... bit of a long story with that one due to a stuffed bleed bolt......... anyway, i noticed my front drivers side rotar, protector etc all wobble......... so u can wobble it with your hand, none of the others do it.
Now........ I haven't tried it with the car jacked up and the wheel on to see if it wobbles with the wheel on but i just thought it was strange.
I've had everything done to my car in the past year........ front/front rear caster bushes, rear suspension all fixed up, new rubbers or whatever everywhere, new diff, new plug........... long long long list.
So ....... I'm thinking perhaps I'm upto the 'famous drivers side wheel bearing going'. I had a look around to see if maybe there's any other way I could think of for the rotar to come loose but cant think of anything.
Any idea's?

i put super pro bushes in my car nothing but praise for this manufacturer i got a mechanic to do the bushes for me as time is an issue for me as i work away from home. I wouldnt look to far into where the original holden bushes come from probably one of the mentioned countries
installing castor bushes have their moments, I had an issue with the drivers side as it was difficult to get the spanner to one of the mounting nuts at the top due to very small workspace, but some perseverance got there. There is also a fantastic write up on here on how to change them.
Although you might be better off getting someone to do it if you get an adjustable kit like the Nolathane one, as ideally you also want the castor to be set properly, which requires a wheel aligner to give you the castor read out and adjust from there
You can set it to standard (as ive done) and theres no issues, its had a wheel alignment 2 weeks ago with them set to standard, but I now have to pay someone to adjust the castor in it when I get the new wheels on next week so they wear properly.![]()
ive taken mine to 3 wheel alignment places now and the tyres are still wearing like crap on the inner edge of the tyre only i think this is due to my crappy tein suspension that is lagging about a quater of a mm a day but couls also be the alignment guys putting to much neg camber on
