Hi there everybody, lost my will to go to the mechanics and don't have millions to spend on an oil change, so going to attempt to change the oil on my 3.6 VZ Commodore with what little skills I have. I got everything I need right down to a new gasket, but when I jack the car up, where's the sump bolt located? Will it be obvious, i'm hoping to find it on the passenger side near the front behind the front wheel, is that remotely in the same ball park?!
Any help greatly appreciated
Commodores rule!
not sure about V6's but the vz 5.7 sump is covered by a 4 bolted plate. might have to remove that to get to your plug. u can't miss it man, it's pretty much in the middle of car (wont be behind a wheel), obviously lowest part of your motor.
make sure you put the plug back in before you refill!!
also, go a fraction under the recommended oil refill spec and check ur dipstick when it all settles.
goodluck man.
Sounds like i'm in for a lot of fun then, hopefully my little 3.6 isn't surrounded by a load of bolts and panels! Sounds like they strapped your bad boy in nice and tight, least you know with Holden it's cos they care!
No no, the V6 is much easier to access. It's right at the front of the sump.. You'll see it if you look straight down behind the radiator...

if you know where the sump is you will find the sump plug no worries at all its the bolt on the front angled wall of the sump
yeah it takes alot of oil. the bonus is the easy accessible oil filter.
that be the next thread "where is the oil filter" ,seeing all it takes to find the sump plug is to get under the car and it looks right at you.well tis under the right engine cover near the yellow filler cap.
and save money re-use the sump plug seal if it look visibly ok.and buy 20lt of oil it will do 3 changes.
- Sump Plug Washer is sold with the sump plug, BUT its rubber and re-usable unless youve overtightened the sump plug and broken it
- Oil filter is under the passenger side engine cover (pops off) in a silver canister, with a 13mm? socket head on the top with 20nM and an arrow or something similar, as it needs to be tightened to 20Nm. Take the top of the canister off, take the cartridge out, replace and put the top of the canister back on
- Sump Plug as mentioned is directly at the front of the sump, just look under the front bumper bar.
- keep an eye on the oil level as you fill because there is still oil remaining in the engine, you dont want to overfill it with oil as thats also a bad thing.
- Holden DO NOT care, or at least I'm yet to find one that does.
oil filter cover is somewhere between 22-25mm
15/16 inch socket or ring spanner also works fine for the oil filter housing..
On a VZ Adventra with alloytec V6 (and probably every AWD variant) the Sump Drain plug is on the drivers side of Oil Pan.
Although it looks like the sump for the front diff, because the front driveshaft is so close, its not..
To check , I poured clean oil in the filter housing, and it poured straight outta this hole.![]()
Cheers.

Hrrm, any thoughts on un-doing an extremely tight sump plug? Impact wrench won't touch it (and that goes up to 90Nm), got in under there with a breaker bar, and couldn't budge it - thinking i'm going to have to drive it up on ramps (somehow, dear god the VZ wagon is close to the ground!@), and get some more room to heave on the bar.. Either that or just cut the head off the bolt and replace with a new one??
Hmm, got it - put ramps at the top of our driveway so the nose was already up as it came onto the ramps - gave me enough room to get a ring spanner on it, and give it a good whack with the nylon mallet - three good whacks and she let go finally! Would love to get my hands on whoever did it up! The oil filter cap was also on at about 80Nm!!
