Hello all,
I need some help, I'm in the process of buying an older holden and it's been out of rego for a year or so, the owner said that he will get the blue slip and pink slip for it which is great, but I in a bit of trouble. Basically i've never done this before so when the car arrives for me next month being unreg how can i get the green slip done? I mean i would need to drive it to a mechanic and I dont have the facility to get it towed, and how do i place it in my name? do i get a notice of disposal paper from the rta and just place my name on it and get the old owner to sign it?
thats my first problem, my second is, once i do get the green slip then do I take all the papers with me inc the blue slip to the rta to get it registered ?, do they issue a new set of number plates on the spot?
so yes i'm just a bit confused as to how this hole process works, if it helps i'm in NSW.
Thank you so much.
just done it my self man you don't need a pink slip as a blue will cover it. as for geting it to the mech just book it in and white a letter of intent and keep the phone number to the mechanic with you if you get pulled up tell them its on its way the mec to be rego'd.
after the all clear the mechanic will give you blue slip and paper work to fill out for ownership and plates and then go get you green slip as well as the other paper work you need and take it to rta
as for the number plates i had to wait for mine cus i asked for one's that mached my old ones
hope this helps man
Hey that does help a lot actually, I just have few more Questions.
What exactly is a letter on intent, who do you give this to the mechanic? (I probably wouldn't get pulled over as my nearest mechanic is only a stones throw away, but better to be safe then sorry).
So if i wanted to keep the old number plates (which are still on the car and are fine) when I go to the rta once the green slip is done, they wouldn't have to issue a new set for me as they are still okay? and I could just easily get it registered with the old ones? and what is required for me to keep the plates?
i'm sorry for the loads of questions just can get straight answers over the internet searches.
Thanks heaps.
forget the letter of intent, that wont get you off the hook with the cops as its illegal to drive an unregistered / uninsured car on the road, about 600 bucks for each of those 2 fines i think.
You need to get an unregistered vehichle permit to drive the car for the day you take it to the mech, and you will be liable for public damage if you dont already have ctp on it
Right thought so.
So to get the Unreg Permit i assume is through the rta?
Thanks
as for the plates thay should of been handed in you can be fined for haveing them on as thay no longer belong to that car any more. after your got your blue slip you can ask for the same number plates if no one else has them
Okay excellent, i've found the documentation on the net so it should be good, i'll get the day pass for itand hopefully get everything organised in the one day.
Haven't you heard of a 'flat top' tow truck. They will pick your car up and take it anywhere - for a fee. No hassles, no fines.
If you already have a Blue slip from the seller you wont need a visit to the mechanic will you ??
Go online & organise a Green slip. Pay online & receive some sort of receipt number for reference.
Then it's a matter of going to the RTA with your wallet & ALL the paper work from the seller etc.
They will supply you new plates (at your expense of course) & a nice new rego sticker.
I think that's how it works![]()
trevor 062, is on the money.
If the current owner is getting a blueslip then you wont need to see a mechanic at all; also a pink slip is not required as it forms part of the blueslip inspection.
All you need to do is organise CTP (greenslip) insurance either online, over the phone or in person. The greenslip must have the VIN number only, and numberplate field left blank. Request a receipted hard copy and take this to the rta. A reciept number will not be sufficient.
Take any previous rego papers if you have them, bill of sale, hard copy of greenslip and the blueslip, (and old plates if you have them) to the rta and they will inturn take alot of money from your wallet and give you some metal plates that you can use and a sticker.
any more questions i recommend going to your local rta and asking them; mine gave me a full rundown, can scan and send if needed.
** you may drive an unregistered vehicle on the road providing it is only travelling to an assessment centre, rta office or place of repair; however you will be personally liable for all damage
Thanks rpurser i understand fully what to do now, just one question, when i do the greenslip and pay for it online via Credit Card, the receipt that is given at the end the one your able to print out, is that enough? as it will obviously take time for me to get a hard copy via mail in to my hands and therefor cant use the car in the mean time?
im not sure as i did mine in person at the local nrma office. so long as it outlines all the vehicles details and does not have a numberplate listed it might do. you may be able to recieve an electronic copy that you can print if you call the insurer. just some options incase, as i am not sure of a correct answer to that; someone else may know??
