Default 5spd Auto - Oil and Filter

Just at work doing the 150,000km service on my 5spd auto SV6. Pulled the sump off the auto and am a little confused.

First off, is the oil for the 5 spd auto just Dextron III? From what I've read/been told it is, but the oil I've drained out of the box is dark brown, and very thin. In fact I can't tell what it is, doesn't look or smell like anything familiar

And is the Gearbox filter different between the 4spd and 5spd? The filter I've been given looks completely different to the one in the box, so I'm thinking I might have been given the filter for the 4spd.. But then again I've never seen one before so I might not know what I'm looking at

    Thanks

hi mate, yeah the fluid is dexron III however they have now upgraded to dexron vI (6) and its a much better fluid and is completely compatible with the old 3, its what i put in when i did mine about 6 months ago, also the filter is different between the 5 speed and 4 speed, so if its different, chances are its the wrong one

Thanks mate, I'm guessing the brown oil was just flogged out auto oil - in which case I certainly wont be waiting another 150,000kms to change it again. I can't believe how much smoother and tighter the auto is now
Just put Dex 3 in it, but will have a look at the 6 later on down the track

And yep, had the 4 speed filter. All sorted now, glad to finally have it all done

I change mine every 80 000 as a rule of thumb. pretty easy. hardest part i reckon is filling it up again

Was pretty easy, especially having access to a workshop
Filler/drain plugs are torx bits, but the drain plug is useless - will never get all of the fluid out without dropping the sump, which needs to come out for the filter anyway. Is just 20 10mm bolts for the sump and it drops straight off, then the filter just slips out - then reverse to put it back together.
Would get a little difficult filling it up without a pump

And yea, after today, there's no way I would leave it that long to change it.

Also noticed that the gearbox sump has a filtermag in it, great idea
