Alloytec 'tapping' whats your opinion

Basically, As a result of minimml oil (im guessing) the motor has picked up a nasty tapping noise coming from the front middle of the motor and increase with the revs. Car has done 105,000 km and is due for a service.

There are a few things i have been led towards.

1) The water pump is on the blink
2) Fingered Cam shaft
3) Bearing or something similiar

tapping noise as you put the motor under load? heavy acceleration?

alot of earlier even upto early ve's get a few light tapping noises around the motor, alot of it comes from valves, might gets a bit of a tap from a timing chain

its all part and parcel of motors getting really really quiet these days, you hear every little noise,

thats obviously depending on what your regarding as a tap?

it sounds like a tap EVERY revolution of the motor.. and increases with the revs.. tap a spanner against a hammer lightly and thats the sound

i get a tapping sound from mine also always have sounds simular to the injector tick on a RB30

How long did you run on low oil?
You may have run a channel in one of your rod bearing inserts, this causes the pistons to move a small amount at the big end, making it "knock"..
There made of aluminium and wear easy if pistons arnt lubricated enough.

ah i remeber something like this from a while ago, its really rare, but remove the valve covers and see if a lifter has fallen off....

yea will do about to start now.. hopefully it is fixable without too much of a dent in the pocket

cover is off on the drivers side, the sound is definately there.. SOMEWHERE..

hard to see in the pic, is all the lifters in the right spot, one hasnt fallen out? if you get a bar/ratchet and socket youll need 1/2 to get the leverage, turn the motor clockwise and see if you can here the sound?

or if you remove the starter relay and work out which pin is number 30 and which one is 87 off the diagram on the side of the relay, you can short that and it will crank the motor, see if you can hear where its comming from there

lol maybe u should come do that !! haha nah i turned the motor, i can def hear it coming from the rear of the inlet cam, and maybe center of the exhaust cam.. bit hard to tell to be honest

he can hear the sound when rotating the engine by hand... its coming from the intake cam from the rear...

edit... haha remind me to bring the stethescope round on friday

whats this mark on the cam?

is there a mark or is it from the camera?

hopefully i can diagnose the problem and have it fixed as soon as possible, i might be looking at a loan tommorow..

did big daddy cool tune your car by any chance haha, maybe because of the extreme amount of cam timing work he does, or did he remove your serpentine belt and advance the timing on the pulleys?............

sussed out a bit further.. with the ears of my partner it apparently is coming from the front of the inlet cam.. and has several taps in several places

id suspect vvt actuator possibly then, is there any fault codes up?

All good mate (Y) hopefully i have it sussed tommorow, have a mechanic coming for a look. If not should be sorted by friday (hopefully). If it can not be pinned by then it will be in the workshop and getting fixed.

Might be looking at a few different things while its off the road.. Stay tuned!
