I have just tried to install a 2100 kg towbar. i got the first part on that sits behind the rear bumper but the part that sits underthe fuel tank i cant bolt on.
Its a holden sedan towbar off a vy and im trying to bolt it on a vz
the problem is that there is no bolt hole on the passangers sude for the extra heavy duty part.
where does it bolt?
if anyone can give me a pic of this that would be great
You have to bolt it to the bit that is on the car then drill up through the boot. You should have a plate that fits up inside the boot as a brace.
so drill into the sub frame near the back of the muffler?
drills in through to the spare tyre well

You shouldn't have to remove the muffler but if it makes it easier to bolt it might be a good idea to remove it! When I took my towbar off to clean the under carage of my VZ Sedan it was bolted under the boot and around the tank and muffler but the set up on a wagon might be different! Have fun it's a frustrating job lol!
Couldn't be without my Commodore
this is the section that im having trouble getting in. this is how the towbar goes in if standing at the back of the car.
i know how to connect it to the other section of towbar (under the rear bumper).
the two vertical braces, i can find the bolt for the right side but not the LEFT.
The other pic is the parts that the guy gave to me when i got it (being as its second hand), he isnt sure if these are off this towbar or another one.
If any one has a pic of how this all goes on that would be great
Take it to a tow bar installer and have the job done so that it will be safe. The last thing you want is your trailer/van detaching and careering off into oncoming traffic and resulting in multiple deaths/injuries plus much expense for you (if job is not done satisfatrily).
its only a few bolts to put in, i really dont want to pay someone $150 just to tighten bolts.
If there is welding or drilling then maybe i will depending on where it needs to be done, otherwise i can do it just need a pic of where it goes
can anyone post a pic of the brack in the boot for the heavy duty towbar. that would be great
is there anyone with a holden heavy duty towbar on their VZ sedan
With the towbar up against the car, the two brackets that sit against the body brace in front of the tank, you have to drill through into the boot.
Isn't that what I said?, the section the goes up in front of the tank.
can u take a picture of what is blocking the tow bar's mounting hole to the body/floor of the vehicle?
From the way you are describing it, yes, you drill through that into the boot. But I will wait until I see the pictures before I say a definite yes.
its taken me ages to find time to get under my car. Here is the pic of the towbar section that hugs the tank.
The photo shows the part that extends upwards on the front side of the fuel tank and near the muffler.
The bolt hole you can see will not line up with the hole in the towbar.
there is also a gap between the towbar and the frame.
does anyone know how this bolts on or does anyone have a pic of their towbar
I think the V8 and the V6 bars are different. The bars are the same from VY-VZ so that won't be your issue, but they have to be the same engine. EG if it is off a VY V6, it won't fit the VZ V8, and vise versa. The only other thing it could be is that it is bent. Are there any cracks in the paint that look as though the bar has been bent?
I dont think it is bent.
I would imagine that the holes on the frame would have a nut welded on the inside, otherwise how am i meant to get a nut in there to bolt it. I found a VY SS in the car park down the road that had a heavy duty and he just left that side unbolted??
Going to holdens tomorrow see if they can help with how its meant to bolt (dont like my chances with them tho)
Its almost like im missing a bracket
Thanks for your help anyway.
You have to drill right through to the boot, a long bolt with a crush tube is used.
You will find that it comes through the raised section just behind the rear seat.
That is the way the Hayman Reese heavy duty towbar fits up anyway.
if you look under the sound deadening (black tar stuff) inside the boot about where the holes line up underneath there will be dimples where you should drill.
