    Default Bonnet Vents for VZ's

    Hey guys.....

I've decided I'm going to get something done with my bonnet to help reduce engine/intake temps. I would like to get like a small thin vent/scoop effect to run down between the middle of my stripes to cool the intake manifold. Also I was thinking of maybe getting a vent for where the airbox is.......... (main vent black to match stripes), airbox vent same colour as the car.

These are my thoughts so far are this.
    ----

Does anyone see any proposed problem with this? electrics etc. I dont want a monaro nostriles bonnet as I think they are highly ugly. * old pic but u get the idea *

what about nostrils similar to the e2 hsv and pontiacs? could have them made to fit inside the track stripes.

as for the air box, thats prob going a little too rice, but your call.

could always go otr, seen them on ebay, or could have one made up

the OTR's are a great idea for sure, but I dont think they'd work properly on the VZ 6's due to their tune layouts. (VE's omega's etc I dont think would have an issue with the OTR)

and yes the vent on the airbox probably would be fairly rice........ but it's a tough call cause anything u can do to keep temps down really is a must in ways....... but ultimately keeping the intake manifold temp down is the goal..... as it's the biggest thing to cut power really on these as the temps go up.

--- The e2 HSV vents are cool definitely, not like the vulgar monaro vents. Know of any joints that'd custom make them?

to be completely honest i dont think it would get much cooler as the manifold is sitting ontop of a ver hot motor.. heat rises.. maybe if the airflow was driected down and around the motor itself

my understanding is that the Maff, TB and manifold are very restirctive to the airflow, the maf is a bitch and TB too small. thus mafless tuning with OTR is not possible..

OTR with MAF once again too restrictive, if we could get a massive 78mm TB then all would be sweet. big TB manifold pipes etc would give a good gain.

svsex: the dash temp guage doesn't show u virtually anything about temps. It's just a basic engine temp guide.
inpulsive: yes heat rises, so if u can get a bonnet vent (or two) that directs the air onto the manifold obviously it'll cool alot quicker as u drive then without one, also when your idle it allows the engine heat to escape thru the same vent......

Also with the OTR and mafless tune stuff, from my understanding the VZ V6 tunes simply dont allow it....... VE tunes have those restrictions removed. OTR is not suitable for the VZ, but they are ok on VE's of any sort apparently.

PS. Here's some quick info (from tuning software, temp monitoring stuff).

-- Your biggest problem is keeping the Intake manifold temp down........ 35'c you get -2 spark, 45'c u get -4, 55'c u get -5 ....... as an example (cutting spark because the fuel obviously wont combust as well and it would cause knock = predetonation, less power).

If you say drive somewhere in the day and let the car rest, come back to your car say 30 mins later......... your intake manifold (even with mace's insulators) will probably bout about 60'c+ ......... minusing bout 4 to 6 degree's of spark straight off. (that one u cant really help so much) ......... but a scoop none the less will help reduce the intake manifold temps (would help greatly on a hot day and especially at night when it's already cold). Most cars without a bonnet scoop, the average claim that a fairly good scoop should reduce the engine temps by upto 26'c......

All in all......... keeping the car optimised for spark/fuel/intake etc........ My car runs probably about 96 to 102'c for an average for engine temp (due to tune etc).... a standard 04-06 exec will usually run bout 86-96'c.

Our Execs/SV6's are pretty good as they are power wise, it's just temps that kill the power they already have thats annoying.

Do scoops and or bonnet vents let much water into the engine bay when it rains?

yeh my big question with the vent is how it'd go with rain ....... if water getting in would be a problem.

with a BDC tune maybe 10rwkw, then paint it with power paint and gain another 10rwkw.. Welcome to the party mate!!

Obviously water will get in, unless u install a fine mesh to keep the rain out.

I'm pretty sure the vents are useless, i would love to be proven wrong. Get some before and after intake temps for me
