I'll be going with either castol edge 5w-30 or nulon synthetic 5w-30 long life oil for my next oil change. a cheaper option is castrol magnatec 10w-40 which seems to be a popular choice.
I also believe that GMH recommend a 5w-30 oil, but i'm not sure. 5w would be a good choice for our colder winter mornings, being thinner when cold than say a 10w.

    0w30, 0w40, 5w30 or 5w40 synthetic with an OCI @ 1 year or 10,000kms is my opinion.

I was using a 10w-40 Nulon Full Synthetic in my SV6 with close to 100k but i was getting bad timing chain rattle on startup. After talking to a few people i changed to a Castrol Edge Sport 5w-30 and it has worked a dream!! No more rattle on startup due to the oil getting to the top of the motor quicker with the lighter weight 5w oil, it also gets better fuel economy with the lighter 30 weight oil at operating temps.

    love it
That weight oil would only be good for trackwork ect. Its to thick for normal day to day driving unless the car is being pushed quite hard.

    Default chain rattle

You mentioned a chain rattle noise on start up - how would you describe that cos I think I have the same thing and wasnt sure what it was.
After the car reaches operating temps the noise goes away.
Any thing to be concerned about?

cheers for your oil advice too.

Damb there was a very good video/sound clip of one alloytec with very bad timing chain rattle on these forums but it has been deleted. The best way i can describe it is like a chain running along a rough surface for a few seconds. I only used the thicker 10W-40 oil because my car had about 90k's on it but it seems with new motors like the HFV6 Alloytec that a thicker oil is not required even if it has higher km's. Please correct me if im wrong guys as this is only what i found out by talking to a mate who is an engineer and a few mechanics in my area.

    Hi,
I've got the nasty rattle snake in my engine on startup too. I started a thread a while back asking if anyone has seen oil filters for the Alloytech with an anti-flowback valve. They're available for lots of other engines, but I'm not sure if you can get them in the cartridge type filter? Keeping the oil in the top end seems like a pretty good fix to me.
    Anyone seen them?
