All i want to know is whats best for the motor reliability wise
(91) Unleaded
or
(95) E10 ethanol
or
(98) Premium Unleaded
Is it tuned or stock?
I was running 95 on stock, then switched to 98 after tune.
Use whatever is recommended by Holden. I believe that by using 95/98 octane it will keep your fuel and combustion systems much cleaner. I also find that the engine stays a lot cleaner over the 5,000 km between changes. Some people claim improved fuel economy although that's not my experience.
No need to use 98 if your car isn't tuned for it. 95 will be fine.
i would keep away from that E10 stuff dude, completely destroyed 2 engines in cars at work..
in the ss its not that much of a difference but in my corola i get around 100-150 k's more per tank going 98 over 91
Would'nt be using e10, but I used to. Go with 95 on most occasions, but run a tank of 98 through about once a month. It'll stop any carbon buildup around the valves and keep it running efficiently.
e10 is no good, minimum 95
hand book has the min rating
which I think may be 91 but they
reccommend 95/96 for better performance.
I could be wrong, sounds like your on the
right track anyway
i think ill just run it on 98 to be safe any way the way i look at it is if you care about fuel consumption buy a rice burner
I know i've a 6 not an 8
I use Optimax 98
Caltex 98

The handbook states a minimum octane rating of 91 with 95 as optional for improved performance it's up to you what you decide to use based on whether you want to spend the extra money and if the extra cost delivers any real and noticable increase in power, for example is it just a marginal increase on paper or can you actually notice a difference. Does anyone know exactly how much more power a standard engine will develop using 95 instead of 91? I know in a non S/C V6 any real noticable increase is just psychosemantic and fuel consumption is about the same as 91.
Sometimes the only real benefit with premium fuels is that they tend to have additional additives that are there with the intention of keeping the fuel system cleaner this is the case if your engine can not benefit from the increased RON rating so if that is the case you probably don't need to use these fuels every tank full and using a bottle of injector cleaner once in a while probably does the same thing just work out what is cheaper the normal fuel plus the injector cleaner or a full tank of premium.
Regarding E10 there's plenty of evidence that E10 fuels are safe to use and are stated as suitable by Holden and many other manufacturers for a range of vehicles they produce however there are things to consider namely that Ethanol is a good solvent and it mixes with water. Years ago a cup of metho was used to get water out of a fuel tank and pass it through thr engine. With 10% ethanol and a lot of water in the tank there will probably be problems.
If the engine has a standard tune there is probably no problem other than the ethanol disolving any sludge and deposits in your fuel system and causing blockages or mixing with water if present at too high a level and allowing it into your fuel system as 10% ethanol is a lot higher concentration than a cup of metho every now and then.
However in a car this old I doubt that there would be much sludge but as a general rule the fuel filter may need to be replaced after using E10 fuel as any gunk that comes loose in the tank may block it up.
Someone mentioned that E10 had stuffed some work cars, was it recommended for use in those cars by the manufacturer? I'd hazzard to guess there may have been other problems that the E10 may have worsened ie crap in the tank but I will stand corrected with more information supplied to the contrary. There are a ot of emotive comments made about E10 and there have been plenty of heated discussions on here around that and this is not intended to start another one of those. As you know in NSW by the middle of next year there is only E10 or premium and if your using 91 now why spend even more than you need to even taking into account the lower calorific value of Ethanol (increased consumtion) it's still going to cost more to use 95 and 98. It's really an individual choice if your of the view E10 will stuff your car then use 95 or 98.
Also worth mentioning that some E10 fuels actually have a higher RON or Octane rating than unleaded.
