hey guys new to this i have a 2005 vz as i was driving todady the temp spiked to the red then droped just over half i rushed it off to the mechanic he said it could be a cracked head..... if the head was cracked wouldnt the oil be white or is that just if its blown help me please any ideas would be geatly appreciated
Check fluid level.
Check hoses for cracks/splits.
Have radiator specialist pressure test cooling system.
Check engine oil for level and or discolouration.
Tech 2 test for any error codes - if any, respond/repair accordingly.
Yep as BenBoy says also if water gets in the oil it foams up
I'd change the thermostat it might be sticking shut

check the coolant cap... next to the throttle body
Check if your thermos coming on??
Also try bleeding air from the radiator bleed screw. Search for the procedure on here somewhere.
now : 05 VZ Berlina V6
had : 97 VT Berlina V6
before : 81 VH SL/E I6
if you wanna bleed your radiator, take the big plastic shroud off the front of the engine bay..on the left at the top of the radiator, on the side facing towards the engine, there will be a little screw..white if i remember correctly, just have the engine running, undo that screw bit by bit untill a bit of coolant pisses out...wait a little while, do it again...feel the top and bottom radiator hoses, when they're gettting quite hot (meaning ur thermostat is fully opened), do the same again, and that should be it
I would say it is either your thermostat or coolant lid. I would try replacing these and then see what happens. Even if it isnt the cause they are the cheapest options and will prob need replacing anyways.
My Car was overheating recently 2005 SS, took it to holden and they told me it was my radiator, so I replaced it.
Car overheated 2 days later. took it back to holden and they said, nah its not your radiator its your thermostat.
same day the car over heated. took it to a different emchanic at AUTOMASTERS and they told me it was quite evident it was my water pump.
They quoted me shitloads for one to be installed ($850) and so did holden so I found one online for $177. brand new aftermarket. and got Ultratrutune to installit and bleed radiator again.
THIS FIXED MY PROBLEM!!!!!
****en hell, i can see why you chose ur name to be injured_otter...having holden **** you around always hurts...i woulda ripped right up holden and gotten my money back..
well i did get a 200$ parts voucher. but sucks cos I would never go there again. but I know there is more out there now.... lol
200 bux voucher is always good..if it doesn't expire, wait till you need something genuine and use it..if it expires, you can always buy brake pads or some other wear and tear item...maybe have a look through ur service book and see what needs replacing in future services..spark plugs etc
Dont get caught out. I had a vz v6 exec wagon spiking the temp gauge into the red for 10 secs, then heading back down to half. We suspected the thermostat, so put an aftermarket tridon thermostat in the car. All was well, road tested fine. Gave it back to the customer and it overheated again. Got the car back. Removed radiator to have it checked. Clean as a whistle. Carried out cylinder leak down test, all ok. Checked fan operation, all working as should. monitored live data, found that the o2 sensors were not cycling as they should. Replaced both sensors. Still no good. In the end after countless hours of head scratching I removed the aftermarket thermostat and refitted housing without the thermostat. Bingo! Car was perfect. Ordered and fitted a genuine thermostat and has been perfect since.
my tafe teachers tought me to never buy an aftermarket radiator cap..they're a little more complicated then just a screw on lid, so i think everyone should stick with this advice..could cause alot more damage then you think
