ive done a search but cant find any info i want...
anyone have any knowledge / tech data on how to change the trans fluid in the 5spd...
is it just as simple as drop the pan, replace filter and replace/top up fluid?...
how does one change fluid in the convertor too...
i had to do this when i was workin at holden..and old mechanic once said to me "whenever your doin a transmission or diff oil change...always undo the filler plug first"...he said if you drop ur oil before opening the filler plug and you can't get that filler plug open when it's time..you've got no oil in there so ya stuffed..so just to stay on the safe side, i always undo the filler plug first...but yea, all ya gotta do is open the filler plug, drop the pan..get plenty of rags koz it can be messy haha..you can get filter and gasket kits for these...just take the gasket off, put the new one on...pull straight down on the filter and it'll pop out, push the new one back in till it's sitting right (you'll know when)...in the bottom of your pan, on the inside im pretty sure theres a magnet that collects little bits of worn metal, clean all the shit off that...bolt ur pan back on, and fill up ur gearbox with the right fluid...when it starts pissin out the filler plug abit, stick the bolt in and fillrup...take it for a good run ensuring that all gears engage properly...not too far from home, and job should be done, when ya come back, check for leaks...if there's leak, tighten up and rectify the leak..go for another run..check it again...job done![]()
A lot of good info in the thread below, including a link to purchase a kit.
I was looking through my service book & it shows it as a service item at 150,000km.
Look here car has shit itself...
you won't be able to do a complete flush yourself , only a partial drain and refill (you can't really empty the converter).... otherwise youd need a trans shop to do it for you
If you want to drain as much as possible from the system including the torque converter, disconnect the tranny cooler pipe from the radiator (the top one near the battery) and shove the end of a plastic tube into the female thread of the radiator and the other end into a drain pan. Start her up and the tranny oil will flow freely from the hose. As soon as the oil flow begins to splutter, stop the engine.
Now its easy to drop the pan. Less mess. Change the filter etc. Reconnect the tube. (Don't overtighten). Refill, start it up for a minute or so. Shut it down, then recheck the level. It will be low 'cause the torque converter will rob at least a litre. You will need a total of about 6 ltrs. Have an extra litre on hand to be sure.
Check for leaks.
have a filter but book the car in for fitting and flush with dextron 6
plus as I've learned in my investigations into 5 speeds, you have to top up the oil from underneath the car while its hot!
I'd rather pay someone else to burn their hands (yeouch)
had the service done today...
about $360 in damage to my wallet...
but a full oil change and convertor flush with dextron 6...
can definately notice sharper shifts
Hey impulsesV6 did you just go to a local auto tranny place or did you have to hunt around for a specialist?
local holden quoted $240 for the service and wouldnt quote the flush
gearbox shops quoted $280 for the service + approx $100 for a flush
i just went to autoleaders... quoted $180 for the service... the rest is the flush...
holden quote
$48 for the pan gasket
$110 for the gearbox filter
and around $11/L for the Dextron VI oil (sold in us gallon or quart amounts)
repco are around $150 for the filter and gasket combo
I've seen the 5L40E kits priced at $74-50 which included the filter & pan gasket. Nothing like a 200% mark up by GMH.
