just interested to see what others think of the VZ V6 gearbox ....
generally its fine to use, however when taking of hard in first, rev to redline then drop it into second, i find i have alot of trouble getting it into gear ... is this just me or is it a bit of a common thing ?
the car has 20,000km's on it now so i wouldn't think it would be a new box issue, it has been like this pretty much for as long as i can remember.
First to redline/ revlimiter and into second I have never had a problem, I find the gears slot in very nicely.
No problems here, nearly 30,000 km and box shifts fine all ratios. Have had it jump out of gear on very rough roads twice but wouldn't call that a fault.
Driven some better any many worse. Better than VX1 S 5 speed of old car anyway but suppose that wouldn't be difficult.
It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious
2004 SV6 manual, quicksilver, LSD (now standard!?), parking sensors, 6 stacker, bluetooth car kit, 1600 kg tow, tinted windows, K&N filter, strut brace
the downshift from 2nd to 1st in peak hour traffic can be a bit crunchy, the cars only done 1600 K's, but compared to the VS its 400% smoother, and apart from that most gear changes seem un noticable especially with the music up and the tacho needle dropping to low revs when it shifts!
yeah i had a similar problem with mine, just take it back to holden and tell them, should be covered under warranty, lol but leave the part out about you redlining it, the tend to frown upon that behaviour.Originally Posted by Sammy
The 6 spd box is the best part of the car in my opinion. No problems at this stage and being japanese I'm not really expecting there to be any.
Yeah, I get a crunch (and the very occasional missed shift) into second when I'm pushing it.
Might take it up with the General.

yeah i sorta get the feeling the second gear syncro is a bit dickie ... its not a huge issue but i will probably just let them know about it at the next service ... its not that far away
thanks for your inputs people.
Sammy, it's been 2 months you had that service yet? what did the holden guys say? its normal? lol..Does it crunch ever time you go from 1st to 2nd? or just wont go in?..as a whole would you still recommend the 6 speeder? I'm still tossing up wether to go the M6 or A5.
nah service is on the 11th of nov (saturday week) so i will know then.
i think it is more just that it doesn't want to go in properly and grinds as a result, or i miss a gear ....
it only seems to do it when i take of hard, eg. high rpm changes ... sounds to me like the syncro just can't get up to speed in time.
aside from this issue i think the box is great and from what others have said here they are a great box .... i wouldn't use my issues as a reason not to get one ....
use your need as the reason to get whichever .... if you like a manual, then get it, if you prefer auto then go that route .....
i reckon its one of the nicest manuals i've seen in a commodore.

whats crackn
ive had a problem since day one! the car never shifted properly from 1st to 2nd and it would take me a few goes to get it in reverse Holden tried tell me that it just needed to be run in then it would be fine. i decided to take it 2 a differant dealer to get my 15000 service an i askd them 2 take a look at it and they told me that it was a common fault with the 6 speed spac gear boxes. neway holden av had my ute 4 2 days an i just gt it back and it feels a million times better. the gear box feels alot tighter an is so much smootherwhen shiftin gears specially when i open her up and give it sum stick
well im going in for the 30,000km's service this saturday so i will be advising them of the way it has been ....
i must say i had issues getting it into reverse at first too, but i just put that down to being a new box, reverse isn't a problem anymore so maybe that was true for reverse .... but either way, grinding into gears with the clutch on the floor is not right in my books!

ive had mine for a little over 6 months now, about 8000 km on the clock and i havent had any problems yet. The only thing i could say is that sometimes i find it extremly difficult to put itno 1st. Other than than, im really happy with my 6 spd and its definately a step in the right direction for holden.
I find 2nd to 3rd very notchy..a little off topic, but how many short crunches would a gearbox take b4 u notice any effect?
for one you've bumped an old post 2 they are talking about the sv6 6speed which isn't a tremec like your SS.
old posts are here to be read..unless it's invisable, which it's not.
And I'm not a mechanic..thought that probably had the same gearbox. Stress less champ.
no worries mate, the cheapest mod for the tremec in the ss is to change the gearbox fluid for a good quality ATF transmax Z is the popular choice check out the LS1 forums you'll find plenty of info on there.
Sweet as, hopefully can get it sorted with a change of fluid..just frustrating wen u buy $30,000 car and it has niggling gearbox issues.
Cheers!
It's the best damn gearbox I've ever driven. Compaired to japanese boxes, it has more feel and control. For a big Aussie car, it blows any other gearbox out of the water.
I even love the sound it makes when you drop it back into 1st pulling up at a light. Sort of like a cocking a shotgun.
Are you serious? It's one of the clunkiest most awkward feeling gearbox's

PREDDY GET RID OF YOUR CAR!!! that's what happened to me... and $3000 later it was fixed
lol the gearboxes are great, when theyre working... but ive seen inside one (my own lol), and the quality is good, but the design is flawed...
compared to the v8 boxes which are visibly better designed (and trust me i compared the parts), the sv6 gearbox is very primitive, and by the sounds of it a few people on this forum will be replacing selector sleeves and maybe gears (due to the dog teeth being worn) soon...
I had an SVZ v6 ute with the 6 speed manual... hated it, crunchy and horrid for a manual
