so being a learner, im not sure if its the car or my driving...this only happens in 1st gear though..just sy i was driving slowly through a small carpark in 1st gear, and i had to slow down a little bit..the very first instant i take my foot off the pedal the tinest bit..it seems like..hop? it's similar to kangaroo hopping when your ready to stall a manual car..but say only one third of the intensity of the hop..is that makes sense.
where as a kangaroo hop would cause you to nearly smash your head through the front and rear windows, this is the same thing..but not to that extreme...so yea, 1st gear, everytime i decelerate(is that a word) or take my foot off the pedal all together it would create the entire car to hop a bit..and it's not as though im ready to stall either, i know that feeling:P haha
does anyone else get this? it doesn't happen in any gear except 1st...stuffed if i know what im doing wrong if it's my driving..any ideas on what could be wrong..or is this totally normal?
cheers guys
every manual car ive ever driven does this, its not exactly a problem, if it bothers you try rolling in 2nd and see how that goes or back of the accelerator slower. either way it still might hop a bit but not as intense
ah that makes me feel better, i've tested it and tested it..i'd prefer 2nd gear..but because im going so slow it'd probs stall, i mean like, 10 km/h in a carpark and then having to try see around cars at a giveway sign etc will require first gear, i ws just a bit concerned as to if it was normal or if it was my driving...thanks mate![]()
so what do you guys do about it..do you avoid using 1st gear or is there a technique around it? i find it rather annoying when my mum yells at me..she thinks im letting the clutch out too quick..even though my foot would be no where near the clutch..oh well..abit over 2 months and i'll be on my own, no more nagging motherbear haha

That's probably why, your not using your clutch :P I was tough terrible habits though, I used to ride the clutch in my VX Commodore, lucky I have an automatic now or I'd have no clutch/brakes left.
Reppin' Alloytech 190/5 Speed Automatics.=
the only time i use my clutch in first is if im completely stopping, or going too slow for idle speed and might stall, then i just roll..other then that, it'd just be changing to second...is that right? what should i be doing?

you'll get there mate... on idle with foot off clutch any manual will do that, try accelerating a tiny fraction.. it will stop the juttery (is that a word) feeling...
Life starts at 200km/h
ha yeah as everyone has said thats just manuals for ya. Wait until you drive a diesel I've found them to be even worse. Just keep the tiniest amount of throttle on or whack the clutch in no biggie!
Also nice ride for a learner you bastard!
haha theres a catch..it comes with a nice debt too:P haha, can't wait to start modifying..but thanks dude...i appreciate how people still compliment i suppose you could say a standard car..always good to see
hey does anyone else find that gear shifting is abit harder or less smoother within the first 5 mins or so of starting the car (cold start)...everytime i go to drive, i'd take off, and the first coupla lots of gear changes would be abit of a bumpy ride...firstly when i go to change gear, i push the clutch in..the effect i get, is that the car was under hard aceleration and i had all of a sudden let the accelerator off, even though i will get it up to about 3000rpm(not quick, not slow) as soon as the clutch goes in it just feels like a massive deceleration..changing the actual gear is ok...then letting the clutch, no matter how slow or how fast, i've tested this too..the car will sort of kick..it would feel aslong whilst changin gears, you've revved the car and let the clutch out and it will sorta push you back into the seat but a tad bit jerky...5-10 mins down the road, doing the exact same thing, the car will be fine...is this just the transmission fluid warming up or what?
what rpm/speeds do you lot get up to before you change gear..1st-2000rpm or 20km/h..2nd-3000rpm or 40km/h...3rd- 2500rpm or 55 km/h etc
thanks fellas![]()

rpm/ speeds of gearchanges depends where u are. slight inclines etc may require a few extra rpm in lower gears for a smoother transistion to the next gear. while learning to drive i found that if u change gears a bit quicker its alot smoother becuase u dont lose momentum, but then again i was driving a torqueless civic lol
it's usually in suburban areas..60 km/h roads mostly, mostly flat, maybe some very slight inclines...you reckon quicker gear changes could be worth a try?letting clutch out abit quicker too maybe? do you guys rev the engine that tiny bit when your about the let the clutch out? rev matching is it called? i've heard that slower shifting or a pause in neutral can help a smoother gear change and is recommended to put less stress on your synchro's or something..is that true?
i've tried it and it comes up abit smoother, but i only do it when im slowly accelerating...maybe on a freeway or something that isn't that busy, but in suburban areas i usually get going abit quicker koz there will always be someone right up on your arse...quicker changes and the momentum thing does sound logical, im just worried about what i've heard with the synchro's...my driving instructor said aswell that when i change gears, if i move the stick too hard and it thuds it's bad for my synchro's...is that true? even with barely any pressure when i move the stick it still makes that little thud noise..normal or not?
thanks everyone
