Gidday,
Today I filled up with fuel and the petrol station driveway had fuel/oil all around the bowser. My shoes picked up a coating of slippery oil/fuel mix. I had to brake after leaving the station and noticed my foot slipping on the brake peddle. So to avoid a rear/front ender I pulled on the handbrake and as the car slowed a little I felt and heard a rather large THUMP from the rear of the car. Does anyone know what that indicates and have I done some damage? The brakes work fine after changing shoes and cleaning brake peddle.

hmm, when i adjusted my vz ute and my dads vy acclaims handbrake..the first test goes thump, im pretty sure it's reseating the shoes in the handbrake....other then that i have no idea...any symptoms since then..has the car been serviced and had the handbrake adjusted?

The THUMP is the diff twisting on the arms and the uni joints taking the strain of the twist. When in drive the drive train turns and the diff twists down or up slightly depending on the way its gears go. Remember Newton's laws of motion? To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction: or the forces of two bodies on each other are always equal and are directed in opposite. Rolling forward and pulling on the hand brake you are stopping the direction and placing the force in the diametric direction causing every thing to take the strain. "THUMP" After all it is the car’s handbrake (e-brake : emergency brake) as said in the US. And thats what you used it for, and it worked...... Paddock bashing is fun, and handbrake turns are fun too. If the car is working fine and stops the same as it did before without the thump every time.........all good
Thanks fellas. I trust your logic Jasta as I never finished HSC physics!
