Default Vz Aisin Gearbox Repair... :(

Ok, first of all, List of my car modz. (engine wise, otherwise too many to list) vz sv6 manual 190
manifold insulators, manta 2.5 inch exhaust, custom cold air intake and VCM tune.
To the result of 159 rwkw.
Now that's great. Of course, I actually bought my car off another P-Plater.
    DONT EVER DO THIS!!!!!!
I also want to highly recommend ICES performance in seismic crt Rowville, John is one of the most honest blokes, and his work is top quality.

Clutch is rooted (208,xxx on the clock).... Gearbox was having trouble in 2nd. Wondering why, I figured i'd ask him to replace/repair the whole lot. Just went this morning to inspect the gearbox now that it's apart. clutch, inc solid flywheel from EXEDY was a VERY competitive price (better than extreme, trust me i tried). Also abetter warranty

Before i go further, ive always been a holden man through and through, love em to bits.
But these aisin gearboxes.... Are one of the worst designs EVER.

Selector fork for 1st and 2nd (moreso on the second side) was MUNTED (whoever had it before me must have been holding in 2nd like he was guna fall out of the seat).

As a result, the sleeve was screwed, and the dog teeth for 2nd gear were worn and had chunks taken out.

The synchro for second was pretty bad, but the worst thing about them, is the brass ring for the second gear synchro only has about 12 teeth on the whole ring.... The WEAKEST design ever.

Price from holden for a 2nd gear synchro? $500...
So to replace... (supply and fit)
2nd and 3rd gear synchro, 2nd gear, 1st and 2nd fork and sleeve, 2 end bearings for gearbox. recondition and new oil/clean of all other gears and parts.
New exedy heavy duty clutch and solid flywheel.

    wait for it.... $4300!!!!!!!!

Now here's the funny thing... the reason it's so expensive?
HOLDEN are a bunch of (insert multiple swear words here)

prices for anything to do with the pissweak aisin gearbox are friggin ridiculous. check for yourself..

My advice? if u own an sv6 with a manual gearbox. Treat it VERY nicely, and it may last. Abuse it even slightly, it will cost you thousands... and don't think you can swap to a ve or v8 box either, because the electronics will throw codes everywhere, and they dont mount the same way. SO YOURE SCREWED.

And finally, if you buy an sv6 (manual) second hand, be careful who you buy it off, and for god sake don't rest your hand on or hold the gearstick in gear, rest your hand on the handbrake or something.

    End Rant.....

keep in mind, $1600 was clutch kit + install.

the break-up of the remainder $2700 is roughly this:

    2 x synchros - $800 (2nd was more expensive)
    1st-2nd sleeve - $300
    1t-2nd fork - $200
    2 x bearings - $400
new 2nd gear (dog teeth and 2nd gear itself are one unit stupidly) - $300

so $2000-odd just in parts.... and basically $700 to pull out and pull apart the box, replace faulty parts, and recondition all the other dog teeth and roughen up the synchro beds. (which in terms of labour is more than fair)

I put bought mine at 50k and sold it at 120 and drove it pretty hard shifted as fast as a tractor gearbox can and it never had a problem. The guy before you was retarded

Its just as expensive to fix the 5 speed auto boxes if they fail. That's cars for ya lol. When you have to rebuild a 10 sec 355 stroker motor then you will know the real pain of spending big cash hehe

the bloke before you must have abused the crap out of it.

the performance manifolds ute with a AY6 has 240 odd rwkws and runs down the quarter and still lives.

These would be the crappy beamer gearboxes huh? ...... which only have a maximum torque limit of what the sv6 actually puts out huh. I've seen a heap of SV6's with gearbox issues! ........ For this reason I'm glad to own a solid exec.

Mate the OP is referring to the 6 speed manual not the Auto gearboxes lol. Also the 5 speed auto craps all over the ancient 4 speed auto lol

so what fancy tags mean stronger gearbox? don't kid yourselves, look at how many sv6 gearboxes have been rebuilt against execs....... Ego aside, atleast on the auto side the 4 speed is shitloads better then the 5 in terms of strength

You do realise this thread has nothing at all to do with auto gearboxes don't you? Well until you piped up. You should try driving a falcon with a ZF 6sp box as that is miles stronger, smoother and smarter than your ancient 4 spd

Once again for the slow ones, the OP is talking about the manual Gearboxes (The same manual gearbox would be found in the Exec's if they were manual)
On the topic of the 4 speed auto vs the 5 speed auto everything about the damb 5 speed is better except power/torque handling, even then there are Raptor charged SV6's going around with the 5 speed auto boxes with no issues lol.

According to my records the manuals in 17X kw VZ executives were 5 speeds, while according to GMH the 190kw SV6; "a new six-speed manual was optional on the SV6" over the five-speed auto with paddle shift

No manual vz execs. The only manual 175kw was the vz S ute and it was a 6sp. Vz exec was 4sp auto, S ute was 4sp auto and 6sp manual and sv6 ute and sedan was 5sp auto and 6sp manual

seeing as how everyone is talking gearbox here, i own a VS with an alloytec conversion done on it with the 6 spd manual, which im guessing is this shitbox aisin. my question; Ive literally blown my box apart (what happens when you strap a turbz to a stock motor and bag it in 3rd LOL) and need to find a new one for it. im happy to do install myself, just need to find a preferrably cheap one if anyone knows???
