    Default When exactly was the 4L65e introduced and the 4l60 discontinued?

    I have just read from a number of sources that the Gen 3 engine ended in 2005 and the L76 was released at the start of 2006.

    It says that the L76 was released with the 4L65e and the Gen 3 had the 4L60e.

    I just got a gearbox from a VZ SS that was made in 2006, so does that make it a 4L65e?

    Just curious as to whether I have the 60 or 65 as it has been bugging me for a few weeks now.

    Also I need to get the gearbox tuned to the VX but does that only need to be done for the 65? Or would it be the same for a 60 from a VZ?

    The 4L65 was fitted to the 300kw C4B engines VY11, the VZ HSV LS2 and the 6.0 change over during the VZ as there was no official VZ11.
    So as long as it came from an 06 6.0L then it will be a 65, the 5.7LS1 still had the 4L60.
    Get the transmission code number and ring up your local holden dealer for comfirmation.

    It has a sticker that has 6HAD written on it. Would that be the transmission code number?

    Also It kicks into second pretty hard, even on light to medium throttle, I read that they may have the corvette servo in some VZ boxes, is that true?

    6HAD = built 2006, HAD means its built for the GEN III V8 and its a 4L6something...

    Check with Holden tho as the data I have contradicts itself, they use an identifier "D" as being for both 4L60E and 4L65E so NFI how your supposed to work out which it is.

    In case anyone in the future needs it

    First digit is the year its built eg 5 = 2005 8 = 2008

    Second string (according to Holden) equates to ..

    HHD - 3.6 V6 Without ISS
    HSD - 3.6 V6 With ISS
    HKD = 3.6 V6 without ISS
    HTD = 3.6 V6 with ISS AWD

    HAD = 5.7 GEN III V8
    HWD = 5.7 GEN III V8 AWD
    HZD = 5.7 GEN III V8 Crew Cab/Cab Chassis
    HMD = 5.7 GEN III V8 VZ coupe
    HXD = 5.7 GEN III V8 AWD 2006->
    HBD = 6.0 GEN IV V8 with ISS Sedan/Wagon/Ute

    ISS = ????
    D in all the above = 4L60E, oh and it also means 4L65E

    Hey Torquative did you end up finding out what differences there was between the VZ and previous 4L60 gearboxes? I found your other thread but you never wrote the outcomes.

    I ended up just having a second hand box put in from a Zed that had a rear ender at 60 00 kays.

    BUT my research did net this info from a Holden technical resource (which is where I got the above info from)

    The hydra-matic 4L60E automatic transmission is fitted to vehicles with either V6 engine or Gen III V8 engine. The mechanical and internal electrical operation of the transmission unit is identical for both, however there are two controllers used; transmission control module (TCM) for V6 and powertrain conrol module (PCM) for GEN III V8.

    Vehicles fitted with an Alloytec V6 engine and the 4L60E transmission have a new control module and data bus architecture from previous models. This is due to to the introduction of the new Alloytec V6 engine. Mechanically, the transmission has not changed. V6equipped vehicles are now fitted with a TCM to control all transmission oprations
    Apparently the VT box I had would have worked. I changed the valve body over from the VT to my VZ, but it lost 1st and 4th which was when I cracked it and said no more. They say mechanically it hasn't changed, is only the addition of the TCM to allow software to control the shifts, but there were some differences within the valve body that you could physically see, which I think is why I had issues as we bolted up all the VT valve body stuff to the VZ box.

    Then again I could have also damaged a gasket or something which was allowing oil to leak, there's so many things that could have contributed to the outcome.

    All in all though the new box is much smoother when shifting, so it was money well spent.
