ive put a stainless piping on my vx when i had it and i thought it was probably the worst thing ive done. stainless absorbs heat quicker than the plasitc and holds the heat in. after driving for like half hour the pipe was that hot that it was unbearable to touch for more than a few seconds. if you were able to buy a plastic pipe that is smooth throughout the inside that would probably be the best as it would have less turbulence in the piping.

someone can clarify this better if they want, but thats just my experience.

For heat alone plastic is better as said above metal will absorb heat and stay hot.
If you are desparate for more flow then you could try wrapping the metal pipe in roofing style insulation or try making the intake out of 90-100mm stormwater/sewer pipe.
I did this with my VS L67 wagon.

How much of the heat in the piping actually gets into the air being sucked in as it passes through the piping rather fast? Is there a way to check this by logging the output of the air density sensor in the intake? I would think the heat soak fromt he engine into the inlet manifold would be an actual problem?

The only real restriction is the first bend, the rest is pretty much sweet, i have looked into this with the manifold and ported tb combo..
