Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has similar issues with their auto SV6. I have an 04 model and when I first bought the car I noticed that my car would not find fourth when traveling on the highway. I used to drive it with the gearbox in the "D" position, I'd get up to 90 km/h and the engine would just rev in 3rd gear with the revs in the high 3's. I'd release my foot from the accelerator let the revs drop, but when I'd re-apply the accelerator it would just rev back up to the high 3's with very little acceleration. When it did change gears it felt as if it would skip 4th and shift straight into 5th. The revs dropped to the high 1's/low 2's and it would cruise just nicely. I mentioned this to my mechanic (who has worked for holden for over 15 years and now has his own mobile service), and he suggested I drive in the "4" position as "D" is like an overdrive function. In "4" the car does not rev as much on the highway, but i find once it finds 4th and I'm cruising on 90km/h, when I try to overtake, the car once again builds high revs with very little acceleration. I know the 190's are a revvy motor but it seems that it's revving just a bit too much, especially since my foot is no where near floored. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Anyone? Lol
Nope, how much km's did the car have when you bought it? If i push the accelerator down a little bit at say 60 km it changes up gears very quickly hitting fifth gear at about 70kph. Your car should not be in third gear at 90 km/h unless you are giving it some stick.
sound like an issue...
4th is not an overdrive...
1st stepo would be take it to a gearbox shop so they can plug in and monitor it...
The car was bought with 120,000 highway kilometres as it belonged to a motor dealership in the country. The dealer was offering 5 years free warranty and I needed a car quick. Haven't had any mechanical issues, only problem was a fault with the keys which kept the indicators on when the car locked, eventually melting the inside of the tail lights. I find when the car is cold the gear changes are very smooth and crisp, and as you said torana355 finds 5th at about 70km/h, but most of my travels take time and by the time I reach the highway the car is well warmed up. Could this be a problem with the trans cooler?
sounds like a few big issues, I'd suggest taking it to another mechanic or tranny servicer or to a holden dealer (not the one you got it from)
Mechanic is coming this week to service the car so will definately bring up getting this fixed. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar problem. Thanks for the help guys much appreciated.
What happens when you drive the car in active select ? As impulsesv6 said 4th is not over drive 5th gear is.
Yeah my mechanic said 5th was overdrive I may have mistyped something. The active select is just as bad, the gears change but once you select 5th at low speeds it feels as if the car has downshifted. Also, when you have your foot fairly pressed on the accelerator and working through active select, it almost feels as if the car is "jolting". I've watched the revs and you can see the needle rise as you acclerate, slightly drop abit and then get back up as you continue accelerating. I absolutely love this car to bits I have no complaints except for this transmission problem that's bugging the Fudge out of me, so there's no way I would consider offloading it lol. Does anyone know of any reputable transmission specialists here in Adelaide?
mine does the same in A/S too by the sounds of it - if you shift up too early, it will act like an auto and 'slip the clutch'-so to say.... mine also drops revs for some reason but i dont think its a major problem. I've had really good service at metro holden on main north rd at prospect, you could try there.
Thanks mate, I think the A/S were abit rushed and weren't incorporated that well with the 190's. Will definately take my mechanic for a drive to show him what I mean and then take it from there, I'm closer to Thebarton so I'll probably take the car there sometime soon, hope they don't charge too much otherwise my warranty company will be getting a phone call lol. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the A/S paddle shift was used again with the VE models or was the idea scrapped?
Active select in V.E. is no longer the stupid floppy paddle and is in the gear shift where it should be. It sounds like you have major problems in your auto and sounds expensive, Good luck with it.
Cheers mate, when I bought the car it came with a 5 year warranty from a private company in VIC so I might give them call and see if I'm covered. I've always been a fan of the active select at the gear shift, such a better driving feel.
Well the car was taken to Main North Automatics here in Adelaide, they've tested the car and done all necessary electrical tests and no faults came up. As 4th and 5th work when the car is cold or the roads are wet they have suspected that a seal ring in the 3-4 clutch pack has failed. Very honest bunch of guys didn't muck around in telling me that it could cost between $2000-$4000. I contacted National Warranty Company in Victoria and thank God they are going to contribute to the bill. The transmission was being pulled apart today for a precise analysis and quote, it's going to take about 5 days so will let you guys know exactly what has gone wrong in order to assist anyone else who may come across this problem (I hope no one else experiences this lol).
