Just jump on websites n look for a double din unit u like. once u got that sussed start hunting round town for a good price
Unless you wanna spend a decent amount n get a nav system or dvd system honestly a double din unit isnt worth it
can get heaps better single din units for the same cost

I only say that as i was lookin for a double din but ended up gettin a single din

You have a lot of options available. There are a couple of things to think about first though. Do you want a Double-Din unit for features like inbuilt GPS, USB Input or Video Playback? Or just for the ability to connect your iPod, Bluetooth or Sub/Amps etc? The second lot can be achieved with the factory head unit just by modifying it. The advantages of keeping your factory unit are that you will be able to use your steering wheel controls (these will not work with most aftermarket units, unless they modified - see below), you will retain the volume/station info display in your cluster, and lastly everything will still look stock to anyone that doesn't know the difference.

See here in regards to modifying your existing unit - Welcome to ASR Audio & Electronics Home Page

If after considering these options you still decide to go aftermarket, you will need a few things -
    Surround
    Wiring Kit + Antenna Adapter
THE CAT - If you want the steering wheel controls to work

will i need to get speakers now? or would i be able to hook them up later? im really confused on what speakers i want to get, im thinking on two 6x9 in the shelf behind my seats and a 12" sub and amp. do you think that will sound alright.

    much appreciated ..

If you have the time there is a car show at the melbourne showgrouds this weekend (28&29) called autosalon there Should be a few installers and product stalls with guys u can talk to i know the guys from Phatt Audio Concepts are going to be there...you should be able to get a few ideas any way... It all comes down to how much you have to spend, i'm looking at spending $3500 on mine this is with an Alpine 502 head unit Boston splits at the front, i already have a 4 channel amp and an 12" sub there will be no speakers in the rear shelf just grills to the boot area where the sub will be, so the sound ports through the grills also having Stinger roadkill sound deadenig put through boot and doors...then when i have some spare dollars i will be getting an alpine mono block to run sub..

I don't know a lot about the fitment of double din units into VZ's, but i assume there will be a bit of fibreglassing to make it look neat.
If you want a good sounding stereo, start with putting some GOOD front speakers in, add a sub + amp to take the strain of bass off the fronts, then amp the front speakers if you still want more. The LAST thing you need to do is better rear speakers. Ideally you will hardly hear what is in the back.
If you are fussy about your music, you will want sound deadening in the doors (at least) to tighten up the mid-bass and keep out more road noise, but again thats another step up

6x9's in the back with a sub is generally frowned upon, as the only reason to choose 6x9's over regular 6"s is the extra bass they put out. If you have a sub you won't have any bass playing through your cabin speakers, so you will have just thrown money away on the 6x9's for no gain.

What sort of budget do you have? I can put together a package for you if you like

Aah, that changes things. I was just writing up a bit of a sound quality package for you, but give me a minute and I'll try and fit a better sub into the budget

not sure if this is relevent, but i found that if you mount the sub at the rear of the boot facing towards the rear is the best bass response, it is tight and alot louder than having it at the front of the boot(where the back seats are), although, its probably not the most practical. anyone else had this experience

You will need to get a double DIN plastic mould. This follows the plastic surroundings (they are on slight angles) and your double DIN unit will fit into this. I know single ones are sold just about everywhere but have only seen a couple of double ones. You can probably get a single DIN mould and cut the bottom half out.

Speakers wise IMO you should get a good pair of splits up front and maybe a set of 3 ways in the back doors. Then what ever amp + sub combo you want for the boot.

Personally i wouldnt bother with the 6x9's on the shelf for a few reasons:
    1. your getting a sub which will take control of your bass and if you have 3 ways or something inback door the rest of your sound is sorted
    2. to fit the speakers and have a cover that looks half decent (not the covers they give you i tihnk they look s^%$house) you should get the factory metal grills which when i was doing mine holden gave quoted a ridiculous price.

Good luck mate let us know what you end up with!
