hi all, need some new tyres for my vz wagon. Currently using the original rE92s. i have visited the local tyre shops and had the following recommendations
Dunlop 300E
Pirelli p7
Yokohama A Drive
Bridgeston Turanza GR-90
or stick with RE 92s.
The car is only really driven around town but would like something that is quiet. i want to stick with the stock size 205/65R15.
Any and all opinions greatfully accepted.
thanks in advance.
go for the turanza, they are really silent and good value for money.
Well they are a great tyre and great grip in the wet if you ever got to get out the way of anything.
My next set will be Gt's for sure, not that size but yep ive had them on a couple of cars, cant speak highly enough about them.
Yeah thay are good, i haven't dealt much with them, but if its only around town, he could get away with putting some cheapies on

Uhh what? Firstly yes there is such thing as a good cheap tyre. You could only be talking about retreads which i would never recommend to anyone.
You have Top of the range tyres, Mid-range and entry level. Forget about retreads here.
All tyres are made to/for Australian standards to be sold here. They are not "potentially dangerous" at all, nor will they cause any danger such as exploding. In fact they usually last a bit longer compared to top of the range tyres because of their harder compund.
Of course the bigger wheels you have the more you notice the quality in them, but for 15"s its perfectly fine.
And finally, not everyone can afford the best tyres out, so that is why the cheaper options are there.
i work for my father who owns a tyre service and we are not a branch store so we do not try and sell just one brand i agree with the guy about cheap tyres not being that bad, yes there is some cheap and nasty tyres as long as you are not buying retreads 95% of them are perfectly fine for everyday use. i reccomend maxxis tyres for a good tyre that isnt overly priced and if you want top range toyo teo's are amazing quality i personally think bridgestones are over priced and you are paying for there advertising im not saying there crap im just saying that there is alot better out there for the money.. this is only my opinion though.
Out of the above ive used the Adrives and were flawless. My money is with Sumitomo HTR Z range now, especially the Z111's.Silica and A symetrical features ect.
Have you thought about Yokohama C Drive? I had them on my old VN and they were a really good tyre, they wore good, wer enot too noisy and had very very high levels of grip even in the wet when well worn. I test drove a VX Acclaim with RE92's and I was not impressed with them. I don't think the C drives are much more expensive than the A drives and worth the extra cost.
RE92s are nothing special. Performance bridgestones like the RE0001 are a bloody nice tyre. The Sumitomo ZIII is an awesome tyre, but its a performance tyre, so they dont come out in 15
Basically you pay for Bridgestone advertising. Probably part of Bridgstone's grand plan to slap them on all the commodores for a cheap price, so the customer will replace them with the same tyre, then charge shite loads.
Especially on the newer commodores with bigger rims. Some replacement Bridgestones are easily over $500 each.
Sorry to highjack this thread but i just want to say, that it's been good reading this as i need to replace my re92, they are shit!!! in the wet I have little to no grip even at the slightest of accelerations.
I have always bought Yokohama C Drives in the past and will swear by them but have just bought some Pirelli P7's because they were on special. $170 each for 215R60x16's.
As yet the verdict's still out on how they compare with the Yoko's. Haven't had them long enough yet.
Both these tyres have an asymetrical tread pattern which is the best for grip versus noise.
I shake my head that people could imagine spending serious moolah on tyres for just around town use. Maybe just buy anything reasonably priced and/or leave it to the shop to select and fit for you. Around town use means greater exposure to punctures, potholes, stop-start driving, heavy braking etc. If the bulk of your driving is like that, fit what taxis and couriers do — you hardly need to turn your car into a showpony for tooting around town (though all things considered, if the cash is there, splash it).
