Default Alloytec Squeal/Squeak on idle and while decelerating

    Hey guys,

Been searching on the forum and google and can't find what i'm looking for.

Basically, there is a strange squeal type sound coming from the engine, which sounds like a vacuum type sound. It's definitely not the belt or pulleys. It started directly after i did the 2 hole mod on the intake box. It is also definitely not caused by air running through the box, the induction sound has not changed from stock. I thought maybe a pinched hose somewhere when i put the box back in? But I can't see anything that looks out of the ordinary.

When the car is decelerating, particularly from 25-15km/h (just letting it coast down, brakes on it passes it quicker), it makes a loud-ish high pitch squeal. I also discovered yesterday that when I select A/S (paddle shift) at idle it begins to squeal. Take A/S off and it stops. It doesn't matter if it's in A/S or not whilst decelerating.

Also it happens only when the car is warmed up. No sounds from it at all when its cold.

I've spoken to my mechanic about it, he admits he's heard it a few times from the early ('04-'06) alloytecs but can't pin point what it is.

Anyone here know what this is? or had it before? Its really giving me the sh1ts.

hmmm... i was thinking possible water pump... i'll have to get out of the car while its making the noise and try to pin point the area the sound is coming from under the bonnet... How can i be sure if it's water pump or idler pullys? is there ways to check?

    cheers for the replies

i think you could check the pulleys by putting a long screwdriver on the bolt of each pulley and putting your ear at the end of the screwdriver or rod. the sound will travel up whatever you have it pressed against

Good thinking richardpalinkas... I keep waiting for it to happen, but i can't get the car to make the sound on idle over the past few days. Still does it when decelerating or coasting down at about 15-20kmh... It doesn't seem to effect anything at the moment, and it's been happening for about 4-5months now. It was the worst last week and hence I started a thread, but the past couple days barely there.. See what happens i guess.

just get one of your mates to listen for it while your driving, using the screwdriver technique lol.

Hahaha... Yeah there's enough room under the Bonnet for a small mate to lie inside with a long screwdriver. I'll try and find some smooth road so the pulleys don't eat him.

hey. i have just replaced my pully belt, which was squealing when cold. the mech said it was because coolant had been spilt on the belt. he was right. the coolant cap at the front easily dribbles coolant down the sides and onto the belt when u remove it with no rag. once coolant is on belt, it will always squeal when cold. good luck

Thanks for the reply mate, but I only get sound when the car is hot, and it doesn't sound like a belt issue. Maybe a pulley or vacuum sound. I posted just to see if anyone is aware of this and fixed it. Cheers mate

Sorry if this is a slight 'thread hijacker' but I'm trying to identify if it is the same noise I am getting. Occasionally in high revs (and most often when the air conditioner is on) I get a loud squeal when the change from First-Second Gear occurs (Auto). Sorta sounds like what you would hear when you stand on a cat's tail and only lasts a second or less. Any thoughts as to whether this is a similar issue, or as to whether I can replace/repair something to resolve my issue?

Not sure about the gear changing sound, would have to be something to do with the auto though I'd say? Unlike your squeal, mine happens when coasting, foot off the accelerator and only at 20kmh and sometimes on idle. Mechanics I ask have no idea why, hopefully someone here can shed some light on the subject.

OK time to revive an old thread! :P

I have decided to post a sound clip of the issue, if anyone here could possibly have a listen and list what they think the issue might be; it would be awesome. It is around the 6 second mark, see link below. Thanks again

the problem is misaligned power steering pump pulley, they are to far out and when the belt is cold is not as flexible and squeeks against the ribs of the pulley, mine does it on idle and acceleration sometimes but to fix is like 150 at holden they fit a mini puller onto the pulley and align it til its straight with the others , bloke at my work used to work at zupps and said he did quite a few of these and reckons its a time consuming job
