    Default noise coming from wheel?

Lately with my vz sv6, ive sometimes been hearing a "woooshhh....woooosshhh" type of noise when traveling at low speeds, it goes with a full turn of the wheel or something cause when i slow down it also slows down between "woooshhesss"

the noise fades when picking up speed and i think its coming from the left rear wheel or maybe front rear,

just wondering what could be the cause,

    cheers guys.

Have you actually inspected underneath your car to check that there's no 'foriegn objects' embedded in underbody? Have you jacked car up, spun wheels and liistened for noise? If not, suggest you do that in the hope that you can better 'localise' the sourtce of the noise.

It would definitely be worth pulling a wheel off to inspect.

Make sure there are no rub marks where the tyres have been making contact.
You may have a small stone jammed in between a rotor and backing plate. Fairly common and simple to fix.
Perhaps your pads are getting low, not uncommon to make a scratching noise during normal operation - usually goes away as soon as the brakes are applied.
More serious could be a wheel bearing - to test this jack the car up, hold the top and bottom of the tyre and rock it hard. There should be no play or movement. If the wheel rocks from top to bottom then you have something that needs further inspection.
Check your diff oil level and quality.

If after that nothing is obvious then I'd recommend taking it to a professional.

so i went down to a brake and clutch serivce centre near me and had the bloke take the car for a spin then had it lifted up and inspected, the guy goes that it is infact the pads on their way out with 20% left on the rear and about 40% on the fronts, he goes that its fine but will need to be replaced in a month or two and has given me a quote which i will be getting done soon,

the quote was to inspect, remove road wheels dismantle calipers and remove all pads, check discs for wear run out, resetting pistons and fit new pads, assemble calipers and refit road wheels...
bendix advanced pad set...machine disc rotor front
bendix advanced pad set...machine disc rotor rear
    flush and new brake fluid.

all up was quoted $450, good or bad?

That quote seems a bit steep. Make sure they do in fact machine all four rotors and flush the brake fluid as well. Pads are about $65 to $75 per set. (not trade price). Say, $150 to $160 in parts including brake fluid, (would be much cheaper than this in fact), that makes at least $300 in labor. Should be done in a couple of hours I guess. $150 per hour? Tell 'em $350 tops!

Sounds like handbrake shoes rubbing, very common on VY/VZs.

May be as simple as an adjustment, from memory the VYs actually had an extra spring available to stop it happening.

Brakes squeaking dont mean they need replacing, the squeak is a high frequency vibration and can be recitfied with either pad shims or special glue you can buy to stick the pad to the piston/s. Skimming rotors may also be beneficial.

To test if its wheel bearings find a safe stretch of road and weave left and right, if the sound comes and goes its wheel bearings.

If the sound amplifies on braking in a straight line its tyres.

you can also test wheel bearings by jacking the car up, spinning the wheel and holding your spring..you shouldn't feel any knocks/notches within the springs..if it sorta makes a little clunk every now n then whilst you spin it, theres something up with your bearings haha...if its going woosh it sounds more like handbrake shoes..

ill take it down to a few places and get some individual opinions as to what it could be, the guy from the shop was pretty certain it was the pads as you could see that their was a lip over the rotors indicating the rotors are being worn into a few mm, if it is the handbrake shoes, is it a big job? Where should i take it for a look?

    Thanks for the replies guys.

well not yet exactly, im guessing its just my pads on the way out which the guy thought. He goes ive got about a month or two until they would really need to be replaced so i guess ill see if it still happens when their changed. I might take it somewhere else soon to get another opinion though.

not sure if this helps anyone, but ive pinpointed that if i park on a downward slope, and pull the handbrake up, it causes the whoosh noise, im guessing its the handbrake not pulling back enough, causing slight contact

    Hi brett
Took my car to holdens the other week to see if they could find what was causing that woosh woosh noise. I was lucky enough when i got there i knew the guy that books the cars in for service so he asked me if i would like to go for a drive with the head machanic so we could both hear the noise together. As soon as we went the noise was there and he drove the car in i zig zag because he thought the bearings we worn but they were not. Then he drove the car and listened for it again. When we got back to the work shop he had a look at the tyres and told me that because i got high performance tyres on the car the pattern are agressive and far apart so when they start to wear down they become noisy. I have pirelli dragon.
I decided to change them because because that noise was starting to bother me. I went to bridge stone and they to me if i want a quiet tyre the fire stones are good so i did and no more noise.
    I hope this helps you.
    Tony
Now i hear other noise which are normal for a 5 year car and they are not so bad

i would have thought that tyre noise would have been constant like a hum?

Thats what i thought two but it would woosh woosh at take off at low speed and then come back when i put the brake on and its about to stop.I would go away when i get to 60 and over.
If i keep the speed constant at 30 the woosh woosh would stay there until i picked up speed
    Tony.
when i put new tyres on it went away
