Default oil filter Adaptor cap removal

Just wondering if someone could tell me whether to loosen the OIL FILTER ADAPTOR CAP is clockwise or anti-clockwise, there is an arrow pointing clockwise.
    I'm having trouble removing it.
    Any hints.

    thanks

Anticlockwise to remove cap, clockwise to retighten (looking down from the top of the cap).

It is only supposed to be torqued to 25 newton/metres. If you are having difficulty removing the cap, it is possible the cap threads were not lubricated last time it was refitted. If this is the case, then go carefully, as there may be a chance of picking up the threads on the cap or filter base (aluminium to aluminium threads have a tendency to gall).

Tap around the housing and on top of the cap with a small to medium sized hammer. Apply torque to the cap in an anti-clockwise direction, while tapping the housing, increase the amount of torque slowly. If your really struggling with a breaker bar, there is something very wrong.

had the same prob. first oil change on after i got my car i had to use a sidchrome bar and socket + a length of water pipe about 1.8m long over the end of the bar + 2 people trying to crack the prick. i suceeded. lol. now i dont have a torque wrench but have been able to do it up so that it doesnt leak while still being able to remove it again with just one hand on the socket every time since. dont people understand that its not holding up the harbour bridge and only needs to be nipped up?

Its just the aluminium. When the engine heats up and cools down that many times, the threads lock together. Thats why it stresses in manuals and on the cap to only tighten it to 25nm. Taxis never have that problem because they're always at running temperature.

Is there some sort of anti seize compound that can be applied to the threads? Loctite make about 4 differnet types.

    Uh, Wow.

You use your strut brace as a breaker bar?

If something is that tight maybe you should just get someone else to look at it :P

Why would i do that when i can fix it myself? I'd rather break it myself and save a lot of $$ than take it to a workshop and pay some ridiculous amount for someone to do what i will do anyway

Besides.. the filter will be good for another 7500 km anyway

The repair manual contains a specific 'CAUTION' stating the following:

QUOTE: 'Lubrication must be applied to the threads of the oil filter cap prior to installation. Failure to lubricate the oil filter cap threads can hinder later removal and cause possible oil filter cap damage'. UNQUOTE

From the sounds of things, they might be pretty much on the money with this caution, although it sounds like the description of 'hinder later removal' could be a minor understatement at the very least!!!

For future information. It would be fair to say that ALL threaded devices, fixtures, screws, bolts, nuts etc are undone by turning in an anti-clockwise direction (to the left). Having said that, the only exception that I'm aware of is that some vehicles, mostly commercial have a 'reverse thread' on the wheel nuts. That is they are undone by turning them clockwise - to the right.

The pulley wheel on the belt tensioner on a Buick and Ecotech V6 is a left hand thread so it is undone by turning in a clockwise direction as is the left hand side pedal on a push bike and the hose on a BBQ gas cylinder.
