    Default Gearbox or Clutch?

    Hi.

I have an '06 VZ SV8 manual and I'm having trouble occasionally getting it into gear. On one ocassion I couldn't select any gear. This happened when the car was stationary. Ocassionally I can't get it into reverse or 1st. It's OK while driving but seems a bit stiffer to change. Local mechanic thinks it's the clutch on its way out but I'm not sure. The clutch doesn't slip which I thought would have been happening if it was failing.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Ian

Not to sure with gearboxes, But I too was under the impression that a clutch doesn't have anything to do with that. I would of thought it's syncros on their way out.

Thanks. I wondered if it was the synchros but thought that would have been more of a problem when the vehicle was moving rather than stationary.

There is a techline on this where it is initially difficult to get first and reverse then it happens to all gears.

Its possibly a lack of lubrication on clutch and input shaft splines causing the clutch disc to bind on the input shaft and not fully release from the flywheel. Although yours being a 06 shouldnt have this issue as the techline says it was fixed in 04....

Does sound like a clutch disengagement issue though, maybe try bleeding the clutch up and see how that goes.

    Thanks RiCeY.

Tried bleeding the clutch when it first happened.

I guess I'll go down the new clutch path.

Now I'll just have to read these forums and work out if I'm going to put an original in or one of the others mentioned here!

don't go for n original one, go for something stronger if you can,
$$$ wise there is much in it for something a little bit stronger....
what i would do before going down the road of clutch, take it to your mech or local trans shop and ask them to look at it.
if its the clutch then replace it, if its not and they say gearbox, then you know what your in for

Depending on your mods and how you drive, standard genuine clutch can be fine.

Ive got MAF tune and catback ( around 300rwhp) and nudging 160,000kms on original clutch.

And I don't drive like a nanna either.

That will come with flywheel as well I imagine. And you should always replace the clutch cylinder when doing the clutch so factor that cost in as well.

If you can get decent aftermarket cheaper then go for it, though for the best driveability with minimal mods the stockie is the go.

    Thanks everyone.

My car has 180,000 K on it so if the box has to come out anyway I may as well put a new clutch in.
