Alrighty, first time post.
Currently own a 2002 BA XR6 (n/a) and I’m looking to cross over to the darkside.
For giggles, here is my XR6:
Narrowed my choices down to a single vehicle…a 2004 VZ SV6, Auto.
Now I don’t want to hear the usual, “go and buy this instead, get an ss, etc etc” I want honest opinions and information on the VZ SV6.
- What are the autos like in them? I’ve had issues with my Falcon gear box constantly and have spent thousands so this is a big thing for me.
- What should I be looking for? Known common issues, etc
- How much should I be paying?
- Not too fussed about fuel consumption, but how do they go? Same as any other big 6 I’d imagine.
- How do they respond to mods? I’d be looking at the mandatory exhaust, cats, headers and intake work.
- Why do the brakes on every commodore I drive feel soft?
Post up any extra info you have that’d I’d find useful.
why the cross over? thats a fair nice looking xr6..
i own a sv6 and havent had any troubles with it.. very nice car in my opinion
auto goes alright, havent had the car for too long but no problems..
probably looking to pay 14000 for a decent one but theres a few on ebay for around the 11-12k mark
i think the mods would be the same as any other car, little bit of power here and there
no idea get a brake upgrade hahaha
Six of one and half a dozen of the other methinks.
whats wrong with the falcon dude?? .. looks a sweet as car!
My XR6 has nothing but issues...
So far in the last 12 months it's probably done 500km....but I've spent near on 9g fixing things on it....Half of that on a built gearbox, converter and drive plate, she's had her innings and I'm keen to get into a Holden...My sister has a VX and the thing is bullet proof, plus they are a decent item.
The one I'm looking at is an 04 VZ Sv6, Auto, Red, red/black cloth trim....took it for a drive and I dare say I'm impressed for a std model, power seemed decent, gearbox shifts smoothly...i'm a fan of the little paddle shifters as well.
My only comment?
Can you drive stick?
Do you use your car in a way that will not result in you being annoye driving stick, ie, no stop/start traffic on the way to and from work.
If you answered yes to all these questions, get a manual.
The Holden 4speed auto is not exactly brilliant.
yeah all the sv6's have 5 speed..
its a great car man, definitely go for it or the calais.. calais has the same 190kw engine but its abit more luxury and also abit more expensive.. both go hard and look great![]()
I missed out on a black calais with an LS in it for 14g haha...beautiful car!
Hi,
Assume you've seen the post about the Alloytech timing chain issues? Maybe try to arrange to hear the car started up from cold to hear any unusual rattles.
I bought mine for just over $12000 in Brisbane in January and there were quite a few on carsales at the same time.
Fuel consumption is pretty good I think (although I just moved from a V8). I averaged 8.6L/100km's on a trip down from Brisbane to Tamworth (was sitting at 7.7L/100 on the highway down to Grafton).
There's plenty of posts about exhausts on the Alloytech's. The Falcon straight six will give you a better exhaust note than the Alloytech.
Cheers
AJ
Yeah, aware of that issue.
I listened to it at cold start and no noises at all. Either way the one I'm getting is from a yard and I'll be getting a 3 year extended warranty, so that'd cover a timing chain.
the bcm's can be an issue on them..
in some ways i miss mine, but in others i don't
i found the fuel consumption was similar to my vx ss but was alot more forgiving when pushed hard.
might have just been mine, but it was just as quick over the 1/8th mile as a vy manual sv8 with tune and exhaust
Chev badges are an instant fail
why not a later xr6 with the 6 speed zf gearbox
