Arrow SV8 - it loves to rev (apparently)

Hi guys. I just had my 6 speed manual SV8 3000Km service (at 2,100Km - long story). I was curious about the optimal gear changes and since the guy I was talking to at the service dept. was an ex mechanic I asked him what was an optimal rev range for gear changes.

I was changing between 2100 - 2700rpm. But the guy I spoke to said 3000 - 3500rpm was the ideal range. Do any of you other SV8 drivers (or SS) change at this range too? I started taking his suggestion on board and Im loving it (the car seems to have good torque at above 2700rpm). I basically hit 60Km/h easily in 2nd and leave cars in my rear vision mirror. While I love the power, I can't help but feel it's reving a bit high? Maybe Im just used to the V6 (my old car) that Im not pushing the V8 hard enough?

I will have this car for at least 3 years, so I want to make sure I look after it.

So what are you manual V8ers changing at? Any mechanics here wanting to offer a suggestion? I just was unsure if this was right and thought I'd get some other opinions. I look forward to hearing what you think.

Mate i wouldnt worry about over revving her - 3500rpm is not going to phase it in the slightest.. there are so many LS1's that get flogged at the strip tagging the limiter every week and ive never heard of any letting go. Just get up it and enjoy ya beast.

pppfffttt I managed 140 in second, and yes it was done at the drag strip..arrr the joys of LS1 tuning. VZSV8 the manual V8's got the lower diff gears, may be a reason you think its reving a little high, the manuals got the 3.73 ratio, now why the fark didn't they put it in all the manuals from the beginning!!.

Cool, sounds like I can rev up my SV8 without fear then.

By the way, I meant if I rev up to 3000rpm before I change gears then I would change to 2nd at about 45km/h and still be cruz'n in 2nd up to 60km/h (it's not at 3000rpm @ 60km/h). But obviously to conserve fuel I would slip the beast into 4th @ 60 km/h and idle along.

I gave the car a rear squirt today (im outta my run-in period now )and was doing 90km/h in 1st at 5,600rpm (just sneaking into the red zone) and 130ish in 2nd before I had to break hard because of the red lights ahead. Im pretty impressed. My mate wants to take me on in his XR6 - he think's he'll beat me over the 1/4 mile. Im thinking Im going to have to have a few slabs on me winning

GenIII engines are a lot healthier if you give them a bit of a hard time while wearing them in.

One of the main reasons for the oil burning issues is because the rings never got to bed in enough during the running in phase due to the owners babying them too much. This was never a real issue in the states as they drive them a bit harder and have a more reliable engine.

BTW most engines aren't fully worn in until they're at the 10 - 15,000 km mark

Cool

1st warning lads.....
Rule #7 - Speeding / Dragging / Idiot Driving - 99% of us have all done it at some point, a public forum is not the best place to be bragging about what you have done in your Commodore or any car for that matter. This is not only a confession on your behalf which will hold up in a court of law quite easily but you can end up getting yourself in a whole pile of trouble for something you believe to be quite innocent. All of the threads / posts will be removed without question.

I wont close the thread ... but keep it tidy, is all.... Clear enough?????
