Hi there, I'm looking for some help regarding an issue I've noticed on my WL Caprice. I have just noticed that the rear muffler/exaust on my Caprice is leaking what appears to be water. It appears that enough water has rusted the rear muffler and the water is dripping from here. The attached pictures show what is happening. I have no idea what the white stuff that has dried on the floor around the fluid is but it is best explained as fibrous, although very fine.
Is this normal, surely not? Here is some background info on my Caprice:
WL Caprice 5.7L 12/05 Build with 72000 km's. Car runs perfectly appart from being a little nosiy for the first few seconds on start up. (ie a little agricultural in engine noise, my 5L in my VNSS sounds smooth from the first breath of life, not sure if this is normal for 5.7L)
I live in a dry part of Australia, car only gets washed once a fortnight depending on how dirty it gets. Climate has just started getting cold in the mornings in the last couple of weeks but this drip appears to have been happening for some time to start rusting the rear muffler, so not sure it would be a build up of condensation. In any case for the last week now it is getting cooler it gets 5-10 minutes warm up before I leave for work.
Any idea what is going on here?
Forgot to mention I only drive it 5km per day, no more than 10km because I live so close to my workplace. Could it just be condensation, everything else seems to be fine. (ie fluids levels and absence of any symtoms of engine problems)
Sounds like it is just condensation in the exhaust system because u just drive 5ks each way it don't have enough time to get properly hot, try taking the long way to work at least 10ks, you will find that it may rust out the exhaust as well.
time for stainless
As said Id say its condensation and you not driving long enough to dry the exhaust out, not much you can do about it really.
Silver Certified.
shit it gets cold in the morning i Katanning
But yeah sorry i got nothing useful to say
It is time for stainless, or if it is a stock standard car, re order a standard part off the shelf, the car needs a good run. Nothing wrong with it, standard parts only last as they do!
Thanks all, I took it to my local Holden and head mechanic told me it was completely normal because I'm not driving it far enough to warm the exaust up to dry the condensation. He also suggested eventually replacing with stainless system. I am looking at the varex system at the moment, just waiting for xforce to get back to me on recommendation for the caprice. There are times when I would like to keep it sounding like a grandpa car![]()
