Has anyone got a genuine explanation for the difference in power output on the SS 5.7 Litre V8 compared to the VZ Calais 5.7 Litre V8 ??
VZ Commodore SS
5.7 L 250 kW (340 PS; 335 hp) LS1 V8 (until 31/12/05, then 6.0 L 260 kW (354 PS; 349 hp) L76 V8 from 1/1/06)
VZ Calais
3.6 L 190 kW (258 PS; 255 hp) Alloytec V6 (option of 5.7 L 235 kW (320 PS; 315 hp ) LS1 V8 until 31/12/05, then 260 kW (349 hp) 6.0 L L76 V8 from 1/1/06)
they could of dumb down the tune as they do on all the v8 models...
the ss ls1 is classified as the high output ls1.. it would just be a tune
curious as to where you grabbed that info from cos they should be running the same power
Chev badges are an instant fail
VZ Commodore
im assuming its from here...wouldnt know if its correct or not...maybe some1 with a brochure could enlighten it better
Holden VZ Commodore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
is where i originally got the info.. and we all know what wiki is like. lol
this website below gives a 2nd confirmation
VZ Commodore Specifications at My Automotive Forum
and this link below tells us more what each engine has added for performance gains
as said above the SS had a "high-output" engine. ( a performance Dual exhaust gives the gains )
keep reading and a High Performance Split Dual Exhaust is added to get 260kw. ( same as a 6.2 litre ?) interesting

I wouldn't really trust that site, There's no mention of the l98 in the VZ's, lots of technical data is missing, and it's well... just a bit dodgy sounding.
grabbed from the holden site
http://www.holden.com.au/Satellite?b...&ssbinary=true
both ss and calais are running the same power.....
Chev badges are an instant fail
It's correct 235kw Calais 250 possibly 260 on ss
shit sorry wrong just seen attachment above sorry guys
Well one thing confirmed my mpg is spot on infact slightly less on my 190kw calais
There is a difference if you check the specs on Carsales they have the SS at 250kw and the Calais at 235kw.
theres no mention of l98 because no vz sedan had l98. i belive the ss thunder ute had the l98 but no sedan. correct me if im wrong
The very late VZ V8's had the 6 litre L76 which had the DOD or AFM hardware in the motor but it was not activated. So there are probably two sets of power figures kicking around, 1 set for the LS1 5.7's and another set for the L76 6 lt. The L76 and L98 are the same motor but the L76 has the AFM lifters fitted but they were not working on the VZ as the software was not onboard.
All Calais are Auto's maybe they tested the power with the auto in play therefor they're down on power
I have read somewhere that the Calais has a different muffler, which reduces the power from what the SS has.
Failing that, I'd put money on a tune as my VZ Calais feels a lot more 'sedate' to drive than my brother's VZ SS.

The VZ is here! About time!
if thats true i highly doubt a muffler will take 15kw off.. it will probably be both exhaust and the tune
who doesnt exhaust and intake/tune their LS though, the calais would catch up easy.
