Hey guys.
Going to use some VHT vinyl dye on my dash in the coming days, I was just wondering if I need to sand it back, or prime it? I will ofcourse clean it, with wax and grease remover?
Just not sure if I have to prepare the surface anymore as I'm using a dye, not a paint as such.
I assume you mean the plastic centre piece? I did mine with White Knight Squirts spray paint, after sanding it back to remove some of the original paint and give a little roughness. Came up nice with some clear over it. I wouldn't use vinyl dye on it.
If you are talking about the rest of the dash, like the vinyl, padded sections, then I have no idea.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
well i did my vs dash and my rodeo whole dash and door trims with VHT vinyl dye .
all i did was use a rag with some wax and grease remover, then got some hot soapy water and rubed it to get the grease remover off then wiped it all down with a dry cloth
then just started painting away , and remember to do light coats . The vinyl dye sinks in to the plastics and vinyl parts pretty good
Well, Vinyl dye is for plastic isn't it? And can be used on cloth etc... So I'm looking at doing the center console, like THIS but a different colour. Are clear coats needed on top of the dye?
You can just use normal paint on that part light sand, clean, prime, paint and clear. why use vinyl dye on something that isnt vinyl?
For plastics there is specific paint and primer.
The primer from experience even sticks to unsanded plastic chrome.
yeh m8, your best just using spray cans and go from there..primer-paint and clear coat results will be alot better and more resitant, the vinyl dye isn't really suitable for plastic but can be used for it but don't recommend it.If you use it on the vinyl dash it doesnt need priming or top coating![]()

The dash plastics are already painted from the factory so you shouldn't need plastic primer. Just rub the painted sections to get a smooth, flat finish then apply the colour using spray lacquer - NOT vinyl dye. Vinyl dye will not adhere properly to rigid plastics and will eventually peel and flake off. It also has the wrong sort of finish when it dries.
Vinyl dye should only be used on vinyls or similar materials.
I had a similar issue. I used vinyl dye on plastic and not only did it take about a billion coats to get the full colour to show through (red) but it flaked off too easy. Stick with paint. If you are really worried about it go to a wrecker and get some practice parts and see which product you prefer.
Alright, thanks guys. I did order in some Vinyl dye form AutoPro, but I'll see if they can swap for paint, shouldn't be an issue.
So I need a spray lacquer and not an acrylic/enamel spray paint? I'm looking at going SS style dash (Satin Black/Silver) and I will still need a clear coat yes (enamel?)
