Default Pro's and Con's of extractors on v6 commodores ?

Was just after some advice from some people with a little more knowledge than myself

I have a 2006 vz acclaim v6, It has a 2 and a half inch catback system, but i am interested in doing the extractors and was wondering on information such as, is it worth it ? power gain ? better sounding ? do the cats need to be also changed to high flow cats ? will it need a tune ? etc. basically all the pro's and con's so i can make an educated decision

    cheers guys,

Reaper pretty much summed it up...
I don't know of any other possible cons....maybe excessive fuel consumption due to revving the hell out of ya car all the time?

A set of tuned extractors will improve performance as they help scavenge each cylinder as the exhaust opens.

will the money to get it done be worth the power gain ? is it anything substantial ?

Nope. The poster above said that tuned length extractors provide a scavenging effect which is true. The problem is that on a street car RPM is generally low which = relatively slow gas flow which gives you next to no scavenging effect over the stock exhaust manifold. VZ 6cyls are great basic transport - even have a V6 wags for the mrs which I enjoy driving. To consider it as a performance vehicle is kidding yourself and a waste of money.

i found extractors actually hurt my engines performance low in the revs. wasnt till i was above 3500 that it really got up on it. off idle torque really suffered. sounded great but! and obviously went better but could never just ride the clutch off idle anymore or it would stall compared to when it had the cast manis on it.

agreed, when i put em on my eoctec i were struggling to tell the power difference..... it sounded better and went a little better if flogged the shitter out of it but not worth the coin... do other mod's first..

exhaust shops will tell ya otherwise thou, just so they get ya money...

Extractors used to have benefits in the days when Holden motors were crude and inefficient and used single outlet cast exhaust manifolds, which really hindered power output. Manufacturers are looking for every practical way to get more power and economy out of engines these days. The Alloytec might not be a powerhouse to some, but it is very efficient compared to the old engines and this includes the standard exhaust system. In other words, there isn't any point in expecting much of an improvement because the standard system does such an efficient job of delivering power and economy.
