Hi guys,
Unfortunately for me my transmission is slipping quite bad in to third gear. It will rev but barely accelerate then will eventually catch... im hoping it could just be the oil if ####ed....but i don't know how to check it? a little help?
But anyway if it's not the oil im thinking clutch packs, so probably have to get the box recod. Roughly how much am i looking at for a 4 speed auto 2005 exec. wagon. pretty sure it's the 4L60 box.
Cheers!
Check trans oil while car is running, clean the stick then check it
how do i do so??
how many kms
it's at 129xxx
Take it to a transmission workshop
im going to. but i would like to know roughly how much im up for?
A couple of years ago I was told about $2200-$2300 for a rebuild with a shift kit.
Brissie seems to be a bit more expensive than Sydney or Melbourne.

just last month i got my vs's transmission reco'd 2000 grand for reco then 500 for shift kit a bit pricey but hell does it go hard alot if your planning to keep the car for ages just do it
mine was reco'd 5L40E (5speed) $3500 with torque converter replacement, its not going to be cheap im sorry to say
i had the exact same problem as your describing, take it to a workshop they will need to pull it apart most likely
#### me...it's not looking good!!![]()
How often do you get the trans serviced? They should last longer than how many k's youve done. What colour is the fluid?
just got back from trans shop. looks like 3/4 clutch is completely ####ed.
requires a new boxHad the option of $1875 for new one installed or $850 for second hand so im going second hand.
pretty shitty really considering i drive like a grandpa, have never skidded the car in my life and it's hasn't done high klm's.
oh well such is life i guess!
sometimes these things just happen, even if you baby your car its entire life, luck of the draw, is that a second hand reco box or a straight swap over?, on a positive note tho once you get the new trans it it will drive like brand new so just think of that
New or second hand transmission should come with a warranty up to certain km's or however many months if fitted by a mechanic, so pays to ask them.
As for driving like a granny, thats probebly half the problem in the first place. You probebly stressed it. Drive like a granny and your engine/trans will addapt to it. When you need to put your foot down youll f**k it.
dont get me wrong i gave it the occasional trip up to towards redline. But it in no way had a hard life in the 40 000km's ive put on it. And i don't know if its just second hand or second hand reco but the mechanic said he's ha a look at it and the box looks good and strong.
did you go to a mechanic or an auto specialist?
took it too a transmission specialist shop recommenced to me from a mates old man that is a mechanic.
My car has just tipped over the 182,000km mark, i've had the car for 6 months and gone around 14,000km since i got it and lately its been reving a lot and barely changing gears, this morning when pulling into the carpark at work, the car wouldn't move and only rev like hell whether it be Reverse or Drive it didn't matter. Then it kicked in and let me barely move it, so i guess i'll be calling NRMA when i finish work today
Does anyone around Newcastle know of a decent automatic transmission workshop that won't rip me off?
I'm totally screwed, i have absolutely no money to get a new gearbox and have no credit card to fall back (recently chopped the cards up and moved over to a personal loan)
Well heres an update, after work the car managed to get into reverse and drive but was still revving higher than normal and i drove it very soft and slow so i could get home.
It was fine till i got to traffic lights and had to stop, when i tried leaving the lights it wouldnt change into any gears again and after a bunch of selecting through L, 3, 4 & Drive it finally kicked back in and slowly moved albeit me putting hazard lights on, i used momentum to get around the road about and turn into my street then rolled into my driveway.
After this it then stopping going into gear again so i turned it off.
Lets hope i can get to work in the morning or NRMA towe to Automatic Transmission Services at New Lambton for me, lets hope they are decent (i have no idea about any places in Newcastle, relatively new to area).
I guess i'll have to leave the car there until i get paid again in 2 weeks and hope i can scrape money together.
I hope NRMA Premium Care Roadside Assistance will honour the loan car.
Delete post.
Well got an update from the mechanic, the gearbox is completely shot, going to cost $4125 for a reconditioned one + installation.
sorry to hear that mate, i know the feeling exactly but look on the bright side, when its all swapped and fixed it drives like brand new
I just recently purchased a VZ Calais 05 with 143000kms on it. What are the chances of me getting this problem? This problem I think is even on wiki stating its common. Is this really true?
Are there any early symptoms\signs of this problem?
