    Smile Vz exhaust note

    Hi Guys,
new to this forum but been a long time reader and have gained considerable amounts of knowledge from this site, thank you!
I have just picked up a 2004 VZ Executive in pristine condition in and out.
It's the V6 Alloytech version, already lowered, tinted windows, nice wheels, etc, but it is quiet as a mouse. In fact you can hear the engine more than the exhaust system.
Now I have done tons and tons of research and all it has done has confused the hell out of me. All I want to do is to give the car a bit of a note, because at the moment when you see the car, you expect some amazing roar to come out of it when you start it, but instead you get a mouse. From researching this subject, I seem to be getting twin 2.5 cat back system as the one to go for. But then others recommend the single system! ? I know it's a 6 and will never sound like an 8, that's not a problem for me at all, I just want a bit of a note that's all. Also don't know if a full system is the way to go, seems kinda expensive, is there a cheaper alternative? and will it affect the car's performance in any way? any idea's or thoughts on this would be extremely helpful.....cheers!

Cheap way, cut out the resonator. That's the reason it sounds almost like a Prius. But it will be raspy as hell. Its worth investing in atleast a cat back system. I dont know exactly what is down in VIC but im sure you can get something alot better then the X-Force which is exceedingly common in Commodores up here.

Put one on my old VZ sv6 n it has a drone spot wen changing from 2nd to 3rd if its an auto which was enuff for me to not like it. I liked the note but if u don't mind the drone spot then 2.5 cat back is good for abit more note

Oi mate, Can you get a video clip and post up so I can hear it, I've got a mate with a bog stock VZ who's looking at tinkering and this would be a good cheap start for him..

    Hey Guys, awesome response, cheers!
Azaeldeath, not too keen on cutting out the resonator and yeah those X-FORCE cat backs are pretty common along with the REDBACK ones, will look into it.
I see what you mean about the RHS hanger, interesting, not far from me either.
Hmm HSV or Lukey cat back, they both sound great. I like the sound of the HSV one, the roar grabs me, but I like the Lukey too , especially if you get a bit more kick out of the car.
thanks heaps guys, gives me some more options to think about...cheers!

I do a Manta twin 2 1/4" into single 3". Has two straight through front mufflers, into a 3" resonator. No drone, nice and deep on idle, but as with all systems on the alloytec, the higher you rev it, the higher the pitch of the exhaust. I have sold and fitted quite a few now and never had a negative response. The car sounds better and goes better.

I do this system for $495 shipped Australia wide.

wow! that sounds quite good. You are based in W.A? How big a job is it to install? I will have to take it to my mechanic to do it, what sort of installation price should I expect?

in all seriousness tho, get a good exhaust system, get your self some pacemaker (or similar) headers, 2 1/2 inch exhaust system with high flow cats and a good muffler (magnaflow or similar) then you will have a nice sounding car.

yeah I'm on a bit of a budget though, as good as that sounds, would be out of my price range.

speak to not_an_abba_fan, should be able to do you a deal mate. I think $1500ish is pretty fair, obviously depends on your budget though mate. But not_an_abba_fan would be the man to speak to mate.

ah i picked it up off ebay!....was off a VZ Maloo R8 and was $100 dollars

its a stainless steel twin 2 1/4", and it has two mufflers

can be on the quiet side at idle but it is a genuine factory "restrictive" system but it can also have quite a nice roar when it wants too

have a shop around?...from what ive been told anything VZ V8 - VZ V8 will fit...and then have your local exhaust shop fit it for you (attaching the new bracket thats been mentioned)

So by that logic whats the point in a V8? When theres bigger and gruntier V10's and V12's? They give an even better note.

Every car, besides a horrid 4cyl and below, can sound great with an exhaust and deserves a good exhaust.

V8s respond better to exhuast / tune mods etc, dont know about v6's but I heard there isnt a whole lot to be gained. Even if so, if your chasing power why didnt you buy a v8 in the first place?

Sometimes the V8 isnt available. I had a choice out of 2 Crewman's when I got mine, the S (which I got) and the SS. Reason I didnt get the SS?
Simple auto. Had been in a crash, lots of scratchs, and finally 320,000km on the clock. $22k
My car had 80,000. Perfect condition, and 6 speed manual. 25k

    What would you choose?
