Hey guys,
Has anyone ever used a can if Subaru upper engine in their alloytec?
I know that some cars love it, and some hate it .
For those who don't know about it, it's great... Toxic as all hell but will clean anything. It's sold and branded by Subaru and is designed to clean the intake manifold and combustion chamber..
Any experiences would be good.
You don't have to use the genuine subaru upper engine cleaner. At work we use Wynns Fuel Injector Cleaner, it says to add to tank but we run it through every subaru that we service. I have also run it through my VS ecotec a few times and have had no trouble at all.
I just disconnect a vacuum hose off the maf sensor (on the VS) and run it through there. Subaru's theres a couple of vacuum hoses on the top of the inlet manifold.

ive used tb cleaner (nulon) in my car, it made it hard to start, and let out a little bit of smoke and thats about it lol, cant say whether it was worth the money or not, but i certainly did clean out the pvc pipelines and all the other pipelines that connect to the manifold, didnt notice much difference
the spray stuff is brilliant. iv used it in many cars and noticed big improvements all round. best used with the engine running so it can suck it right down.

its just a spray that disolves carbon on contact. and it works well.

problem is with the alloytec, if you disconnect a vacum line, it stalls, well thats the prob i had when i went to spray it in there, unless theres a specific vac line to spray into when the car is running?
Get a mate to give the car a bit of a rev to avoid the the stall
My daughter has a Subaru Imprezza and the Subaru dealer used a bottle of stuff that is added to the fuel not a spray of any sort, they also gave her another bottle and said to add it to the fuel at the midway point between services, from memory reading the container it said for controlling carbon deposits in the intake and around the valves and cleaning the fuel system, it was more than just injector cleaner but used as a fuel additive not a spray.
I will have a read of the container tomorrow as I have it in the garage from the last Subaru service.
Drewie .... think your getting your additives mixed up.
There is a Subaru service part no. SA459 Upper Engine Cleaner which is an aerosol used every service. It's sprayed directly into the inlet through the vacuum hose connection (can also spray some into the air intake to remove gum deposits).
Half a can is sprayed it then wait 10 minutes. Then the vehicle is started & whilst idling (juggling the throttle cables) the remainder of the can is sprayed into the inlet & the engine is turned off. Wait another 10 minutes, then restart the engine & rev the crap out of it to 4000+ revs till the smoke from the exhaust clears. Reattach the vacuum hose.
It looks lie a jumbo jet on takeoff whilst revving it out to decoke the heads - but take it for a drive afterward & it's like an asthmatic having just had a suck on their puffer spray.
Separately, there is the fuel additive SA718 which is used at service & half way between services to help keep the injectors clean.
The SA459 is specifically to decoke the heads in a boxer engine. I'm not to sure how you'd get it into a VZ or what benefit it would give for your $20 a can.
Just make sure they use it when servicing your daughters Soobie though. It does make a difference to them.
It worked well on my old vs v6 ute, cleaned it out good, however dont do it in your garage LOL almost killed myself from the fumes holy shite there strong lol
Does the job. Not sure I would use it on VZ engine... they shouldn't have that much buildup in them to start with.
Just run premium through it every month or so and that should be enough.
Thanks for the above info 'Trent L' just checked the container in the garage it is SA718, she has only had the Subbie for a few months, she had it dealer serviced at Lilydale (Eastern Subaru), do the dealers use the spray stuff on any particular service? Her Subbie has a full Subaru dealer service history from new. Thanks again for the info.
yeh I used it on the Acclaim about 2 years ago, I'll try and find the video clip of it
Dunno if it made a difference as we also tuned it that day, but it definately created a lot of black smoke for about 3 or 4 seconds after starting it up so it did something
I think this will do my VL some good
Yea I've heard great things about this stuff, I'll be doing it during my next service!
Would be interesting to so some before and after photos of (for example) an ecotecs plenum to see if it cleans up the dirty bastard much...
Ford (MotorCraft) have an aerosol that is exactly the same stuff.
They are made by Bar's Leaks.
Thanks for the input guys, it's not the price/availability I'm worried about, I've got the stuff coming out the rear end. I'm just curious, i know it works great in subaru's, I use it every day, just wondering bout the alloytec in particular, as I've heard in some other cars it can make things worse, set off error codes etc...
just make sure to give it a rev while spraying it in so it doesnt stall. just to make sure it gets all the way thru.
edit: first time i used it on the wifes car i just sprayed it in the TB with the engine off, it nearly comression locked. so i wouldnt recommend using it with the engine off.

Not sure it could compression lock? When I use it it subies, as directed, spray half into intake vac line let it sit, then crank till starts then rev and empty rest of can.. Never any probs
I have used it a few times, Didnt really seem to do much. Would like to try seafoam though.
we didnt have the acclaim running when we sprayed it in
Just one thing to note... this stuff is designed to work in boxster engines specifically.
Using it on other configuration engines CAN increase the chances of it doing damage of some sort.
When I did it on the bimmer it was spray it in and make the car stall. This stuff needs to sit in the cylinders in order to work. This is risky area number one since you can hydrolock if you pour it in there like a retards.
Then, you start up and rev it out. Risky area number 2 because if there is enough shit coming out if can clog cats up abit plus foul O2 sensors.
You also want to make sure you get it ALL out as from what I read it can degrade rubber seals.
Good luck.
