Hey I'm about to purchase some new pads and was just wondering what you guys think a mechanic would charge me to install both sets (front + rear) + the machining of the brakes as well.
I popped into kmart tyre and auto service (just wanted to get a rough estimate and it's around the corner from college so I thought why not) and they told me $170. Is this an alright price?
Cheers
That sounds pretty good to me.
What are they putting in? Make sure they're decent pads.
I'd pick an hours labour + 30odd a disc to skim + pads
Takes me about half hour to do all 4.... Got any mates who will do it for a carton of beer?
I'll ask a couple but at the moment it's just me and my mate and we are slowly trying to teach ourselves these little things.
People may disagree but brake pads and rotors aren't too difficult to do yourself.
But you'll have to pull them out then go get them skimmed and put them back.
Ah yeah I didnt see the machining part... Seems like a good deal if that's included, not everyone has a lathe in their back shed.
But brakes are extremely easy to do if you have the right tools and knowledge but extremely dangerous if your don't.
Have a look on youtube as how its done, not as a reference to DIY but an idea of what they will be doing......

VX front Brake pad Change How To Detailed
Wow I wish my ones where that cheap. Mine are $149 Rears, $160 Fronts.
As for how hard it is to change the brake pads yourself. A nice big G clamp, a socket set and a breaker bar and you can do a brake change without even breaking a sweat.
$170 all up isn't too bad, just remember brakes is the one thing you dont want to cheap out on. I can tell you from experience that you dont want to put your foot down and not have any brakes. It is a very terrifying moment (I took it to a mechanic to get my rotors changed over since the old factory ones basically fused into place and they left a massive amount of air in the lines).
If you have to ask about it you shouldn't do the brakes yourself, as others have said, you cannot afford to stuff around with brakes for yours and every other road user's safety. It sounds like a sensible option to get a mechanic to do it, and the price isn't too bad if your disks are getting done too.
If you want to start DIY servicing, start on something other than the brakes.
