Apart from unshrouded being illegal, whats the difference in pod filter arrangement ?? Wouldve thought that either way being in an engine bay its gonna cop some hot air surely the shroud would warm up a bit even if the air is being pulled through pipes ? Also enclosed vs no enclosure, wouldnt the enclosed pod filter be restricted in how much air it can pull ? Also - anyone thats ever put a pod filter directly in - whats the biggest size k&n u can throw in without too much hassle ??
I will answer what I can.
A good shroud will heat up minimally compared to a cheap metal shroud. It is designed for many reasons, the most important reason most manufactures have is making it legal. The second is keeping water and crap from getting on the pod filter as easy. Thirdly to limit the heat transfer from the egine to the intake area of the pod filter. And finally it makes the pod filter draw air from cooler areas, in other words it isnt pulling the air in from near the exhaust which will be exceedingly hot compared to pulling the air from around the headlight.
The pod filter can only draw so much air and if you look at the area it is located you will notice there is alot of areas for the air to actually be drawn in from outside the engine. So the air will actually be cooler. You also need to consider the engine itself can only pull in so much air before needing forced induction, in most cases a med-large size pod filter will be large enough to give the engine as much air as it can possible use.
I have put a pod filter in my car a few times, the first time I just put it on after my oxy sensor, no shroud or anything. While it did improve my fuel economy I noticed it got real dirty, and real hot fast. I almost caused major problems in the wet season because of it, after a nice heavy rain I noticed my car running a bit sluggish, I pulled over at a servo and noticed the front side of the pod was damp. Thankfully I kept a spare pod (well it was my friends I had just cleaned it for him) in my car so I just changed it over. So I would highly recommend a shroud.
Your final question I cannot answer as I haven't tried to throw massive pods on my car that are usually reserved for forced induction vehicles.
How fast did it get real dirty ? And how did u know it got real hit fast ? What kinda probs could the wet filter have possibly caused ?? My mate has had an unshrouded pod filter in his skyline and no probs ever...
It took 1 1/2 weeks for it to get from red to a brown.
The reason I know it got hot fast, I ran to the shops then went to take my pod filter off, gave myself a nice burn from it (the metal cap on the end).
And a wet filter doesnt let air in, the worst it can possibly do is pull water into the engine. That can have varying degree's of damage. Most of which I couldnt even fortell.
I know some people get away without ever putting a shroud on them, hell even my brother in laws skyline is unshrouded, though I noticed their bonnets have more of a downward lip on them. Also noticed the location of the pod filter is alot more protected then it is on the commodores.
But the end of the day its entirely your choice, I just answered your question to the best of my knowledge.
Yeh u gave a mad response, thanks man, ill definately look into some kind of pod protection. Thanks heaps
Pod filters are retarded. They do nothing for performance, they just give you a induction noise, which reminds me of a lancer with a droid bodykit..
Do the 2 hole mod to your standard airbox, cold air does wonders for engines...
Two hole mod its like $19 for the mod from memory and it works so much more efficently. However if you wish to travel towards a pod filter don't go paying big bucks for a SS inductions. The mace engineering one works just as well (if not better) and is only $270 compared to $550. And to answer your questions about shrouds i think thats already been covered quite well
2 speed powerglide...fast and faster
I had a mini truck a couple of years ago that had a pod filter on it. The engineers certificate read " visible under an open bonnet" so being un-shrouded isn't always 'illegal"
Not illegal in WA , pod filter just has to be secured.
Defeats the purpose IMO, if you want the 2hp increase do it properly, otherwise a high flow panel is just as good.
Got the 2 hole mod with a k&n panel filter, makes a bit of noise but generally no difference, might look at the mace one, price seems reasonable![]()
Yep, im in the same boat... Auto.
But you can't "nanny" your motor all the time. You have to clean the pipes out once in a while.
When i do clean the pipes out with my foot, i like the little extra push around 3000rpm

Yeh opened it up on the way to work this morning using A/S, felt good torque around 3000rpm... Lost a bit of traction due to wet road, should do it more often, pity theres never anyone on the road early in the morning to have a go with![]()
