    Default Manual or Automatic?

Hey, about 45 days till I turn 18 and get on my P's

Posting in the VZ section because I want to get a VZ Sv6, but can't decide whether I want auto or manual...
I've been getting driving lessons for manual (only because I don't have a manual car) and I'm doing really well, but the thing is; I'm finding it annoying having to constantly change gears, especially during traffic!
So, question is, do you adapt to manual and get over the constant struggle of having to change gears?

Also, keep in mind that most VZ Sv6's for sale in Victoria that are manual have at least 100,000 km's while the auto's have some with 70,000 km's.

    Thanks for any opinions/advice!

Driving a maunal is fun but when u stuck in traffic its a nightmare, ur one foot is constantly on the clutch and ur left hand busy with changing gears, so for example if u having a macca, u cant drive and eat easily in traffic, whereas in Auto u are only using ur one foot and one hand.
I had a manual for 4years before i bought my Auto vy last year and i do alot of driving everyday (rnd 180ks) so driving a auto had made my life bit easy.

Every thing got Pro's and Con's
Only thing is you need to decide , If you are just driving for leasure then go for a manual but if u gonna be driving in peak traffic hours than shud be more inclined towards a auto.

Also i noticed that u r gonna be turining 18 so you will be also riding with ur Gfriends. so take it as a senerio that would you like to have ur left arm around her or around the gear stick ,as if u driving a manual no way u would be fiddling with ur Gfriend ,
When u would be holding her hand ,the car would also want you to change the gear.

i just bought my first commodore after a long commodore standing relationship in my family
i went from an auto galant 70 kw with 50 at the wheels front wheel drive to a 2005 vz manual 190
ive been with my first manual for 3 months now
    love it
me being a very fidgety driver i needed a manual because im always moving im always wanted to shift up shift down and just keep busy other wise my mind gose a walk-abouts
and doing this in a very old galant did not do the car any justice
ANYWAY my point is its all about who you are
some people just love to sit there get to point a to point b easy and just without doing anything really at all
but if you are like me and like to feel in control of the situation and want to keep busy then yeah a manual is for you and its an easy decision but a hard one to live with if you make the wrong one
    and yes btw
a manual in traffic is a bitch ... but you learn to do things like keep greater distance so you dont have to #### around so much
but then again an auto is a bitch most of the other time as well
but i still would choose a manual again and again

V8's are the only engines that should come with an option for automatic

    everything else manual

I personally hate manuals. I dont feel like I am in control, and when I go to drive one I keep using the 'clutch' which turns out to be a brake.

Not to meantion the manuals feel alot stronger. I gun it in my mums commodore and it feels like the car is crawling off the line though it is revving like crazy. I gun my 6 sp and I get pushed back and I can control when I want to shift.

I think i fixed that for you.

Auto for the win. I kick myself for buying a manual. There's much more to being in control of a car than the gears, plus I'm yet to see someone change gears quicker than a manual.

I do agree with some of it, but personally I feel more in control of the car when I can change the gears at will. I also use my car for other things, which an auto is not suited for (drifting). But it does show that it is more of a personal choice.
You hate Manuals, I hate Auto's. So Mazaa, my advice, take an auto and manual for a test drive. And see what feels best and most comfortable for you.

Any you clearly haven't seen me change gears...

I recon, manual is more fun to drive and I find it enjoyable. But if you're going to be in traffic every day then maybe an auto because after a while of stop/start traffic in a manual I'm over it.

Manual for sure. I reckon you will adapt to changing gears all the time. If auto is lazy and gets boring after a while. ive owned both auto and manual and what a manual for my next car. The only bonus is having a free hand in traffic to eat or drink haha lol

Just gone from a XR6T 6speed auto to a VZ SSmanual, will never look back. You can change gear earlier to save fuel or hold gear for overtaking. From what i noticed though is auto's are cheaper to buy and the box itself is cheaper to repair or replace than the manual. Drive both and see what you like, but they are a biatch to drive in traffic.

thanks to everyone for their replies.
but to pazzogen manuals are cheaper to buy (initial cost of whole car), coz autos are seen as more convenient these days

the only answer i can think of in regards to 'stretching gears to overtake' is to chuck the car into sports/tiptronic to somewhat stretch the gears out.
and omg the manual was a pain in traffic, i hate it so much haha.
so at the moment, i'm probably swaying towards the auto

Dont!! traffic will grow on you i reckon lol. Manuals are normally worth more second hand though. And i thought generally manuals where cheaper to repair.

Thats what i thought to that manuals were cheaper to fix, decent clutch is $1000 to $1500, and to replace gearbox anywhere from $2000 to $3500 i have seen. You could have a built auto for less i think with stall converter.

I've driven loss off autos and manuals, growing up on a farm and driving tricks for work, I have to say manuals are more enjoyable to drive but in traffic are a pain. I have an auto VP for my daily and about to get a kawasaki ninja 250r for my manual fix :-)

manual definatly for me, if in traffic I would suggest a vy II, to me the older engine seems to be a lot more forgiving in traffic, however the vz box seems to be a lot smoother been a jap box.

Used to drive an 05 Executive. Auto.

Now Drive an 04 SS. Manual.

Never EVER Going back to an auto, Or a 6 for that matter. So much more fun with the manual, Screw that little tiny bit you loose in gear changes speedwise. You still have more power stock to compensate it over the auto.

Get a manual for sure. I learned in Auto, got and auto license, bought an Auto car but I always wish I went manual. I got the chance when I was 23. I decided to buy an old dodgey van to go traveling in so I got an old 5 speed econovan and taught myself to drive it (stalled a few times on the way home from buying it tho!). I've gotta say for the 6 months I drove it I had so much fun and made up my mind to get a manual for my next commodore when I part ways with my statesman.

Driving in heavy traffic is really easy after a while. You don't even think about clutch control or gear changing after a week or two, it just happens naturally. And thats coming from me who taught myself how to drive one for someone who learned properly it should come even easier.

Manual all the way. I hate that if you want a higher spec car you have to have an auto. My Adventra is auto with that active select thing and I hate it, it is not in any way a replacement for a proper manual box. I drive in trafic and couldn't care less about changing gears in my daily. I would choose a manual whenever I could.
