    Default Diff Upgrade - Warning

    I have a 2006 VZ Executive - mods galore.

I post this as just a warning to those thinking of 'beefing up launch power' off the lights....... by changing their differential.

I went from a 3.08 NON-LSD to a 3.45 LSD. Now after approx a year of having it....... having the car tuned etc. I had a really odd cyclic knocking sound, started off light, got louder over months mostly at light throttle, off throttle and highway........... which eventually turned to a loud sound and highway vibration.

Turns out, my drivers side (used to be the non pickup wheel due to no LSD)........ broken half shaft, damaged main drive half shaft. Easy to fix........

My point is....... better diff = more pressure placed on the half shafts which are probably not designed for the higher ratio. So if u do your diff, get aftermarket stronger half shafts. Torque launching at lights also obviously doesn't help them last......... not that I do hardly ever but still.

Yeah...i dont really get what you're trying to say?

I run standard half shafts im my car with over 230rwkw and never had an issue with them. Just as there are plenty of people running much higher numbers through standard items.

Yours were just old and shit.

wouldnt the lsd diff actually mean less stress on the half shafts as the power will be divided equally between 2, rather than the full power exherted into just the one?

    Just in, the mod list.

    K@N pod filter (+50kw)
    Rear muffler cut out (+50kw)
Three bottles of octane booster (+25kw per bottle)
    Chopped springs (Outhandles supercars)
    Hiclone (acts like turbo +200kw)
    Engine covers removed (+50kw)

Thats 425kw over standard, no wonder the diff broke.
    Silver Certified.

It would seem given the part numbers they may put a weaker half shaft on cars that come stock non lsd.... as they don't need to be strong.

I'd say half my issue is the ability to jump from anywhere to 6000rpm at will in the appropriate gear ..... which i'll detune somewhat.

I have seen a absoloutely smashed (twisted cv joint) half shaft on a brand spankers VY or VZ HSV (it`s been a while now and god only knows how that happened ). This is only the second time iv`e known of one to fail. But there is probably more out there that have failed. Generally you will find they are extremly strong enough for most road cars.
