Hi, I'm looking to buy an SV6 commodore and the other day i went out to testdrive one and it has a really distinct whine sound kind of like a supercharger. I've read many forums and apparently there's a whining issue with the a/c belt or something. But I didnt have the a/c on so what do you guys think? I have a sound clip I recorded with my phone, if anybody can help me out please pm me ur email and ill send u the sound file and you can let me know what you think.
The sound file is of the sv6 being revved while in neutral. The sound is coming from the engine bay so i doubt it's the diff, and you can hear it when the car isn't in gear (parked in neutral and revved) so i dont think its the gearbox.
all thoughts appreciated, cheers!
The alloytecs seem to have a whine at the diff, the car may also have a strange whine under acceleration with the a/c on which happens whenever it seems to feel like. There's also the timing chain rattle and possibly the balancer pulley. Goooooood luck
The whine you are hearing is most prob the Idler pulley under the tensioner pulley.
No biggy, $50 part
The auto gearboxes also whine. The worst one is when the AC is on though.
Another possible cause of whine is your power steering pump cavitating or airating. But that would be obvious because it would change with turning the steering.

give everything a spray with wd40 wheels brakes that should fix the squeaks
well it's definetly not the powersteering or diff- its coming from the engine bay. And it sounds alot more serious than a pulley that needs a $50 repair. Is there somewhere i can upload a sound file for people to download and listen too?
Ill add to the confusion...
Alternators dying.
take the serp belt off, then run the engine. Not for too long because the waterpump isnt running(i havent looked at the waterpump on these so i assume its run by pully). If the noise goes away its definately something driven by the belt. Feel the bearings on each accessory, if one of em feels gritty and course then its your culprit(including the idler).

Hi MiKExAUS,
what colour is the intake on the engine - in the feb 05 update they revised the cam gears to make them quiter amoung other things (less importantly euro3) and made the intake silver, I have the black intake engine and I think it has the same whine you are talking about. I also had an manual sv6 with the same whine. If you do a bit of research into the cam gears you should find more info. The silver intake engines seem to not have the whine but apparently have serious issues with the timing chains (by the engine numer range given in another thread euro 2 engines are not affected, sorry can not find it quickly)
My mates Vz Calais has that whine also but haven't had the chance to diagnose it as exams are coming but it sounds like an internal noise from the engine.
Way too loud to be a pulley or a belt.
Keep us updated.

Great way to find if its a pully. Take the belt off?
