Hey fellla's
I'm having a bit of trouble with the handbrake in my 05vz sv6.
So I just got home, pulled my handbrake up as per usual and shutoff the engine while still in drive, the car started rolling backwards and since the engine was off the imobiliser kicked in and locked off the brake pedal so I was slowly rolling with no way to stop except throwing it into park. I'm assuming this is not normal as the handbrake should lock up the rear in gear or neutral, engine on or off???. I'm hoping this has nothing to do with an earlier incident today where I decided to turn off the t/c in the rain which ended with me doing a 270' spin in front of about 30 cars (which I will not be doing again!!) Usually I would put it into park first before switching the engine off but for some reason I didn't just now, and I don't want to one day do the same on a hill and hit anything.
Any info before I contact Holden would be great! Cheers!!
Immobiliser locking off the brake pedal? I've never heard of that before.
Your handbrake needs adjustment or new shoes.
You turned off traction control and somehow did a 270 spin, you may want to reconsider your driving techniques. Your current one needs work.

You know the brake pedal is powered right? The booster should be able to hold a vacuum for 24 hours so there should still be 2 or 3 pumps before it goes hard. But if it has a vacuum leak it will be gone shortly after you stop.
I'm very sure it seemed like it was locked but it was actually unpowered. Because I can move my car engine and ignition off no worries. And I don't see the purpose of locking the brake off.
As for the handbrake, did it pull up more than normal?

wow... school holidays come around so fast
Hand brake - immediately go to your nearest competant shop and have your h/brake adjusted or shoes replaced
T/Control - Dont touch this switch if the end results in a spin, google oversteer and understeer, you will find a defensive driving manual that will give techniques on how to 'avoid' or 'correct' such occurences. Find a paddock on someones property and practice controlling both, this will help you out in later life im sure

Ah ok thanks crustin, yes there is usually at least a few pumps I'll go give it a test in a little bit, I didn't realize it was just loosing vacuum pressure I assumed it was some security feature haha stupid me. As for the handbrake I didn't pull it up any differently to usual but I'll go muck around with it. I'll know something's wrong it I move the gear stick and it starts to roll because I've done that heaps to pull the dash out and it's never budged. Thanks guys
I have been out of school for a few years now mate, yes it was a stupid ass thing to do though I'll agree with that. So I just gave it a test and in the normal 3 click position it holds the car when in neutral and my brake did hold vaccum overnight, but when I released it to even the 2 click position it didn't hold so it probably need re-tensioning. Plus usually if I'm moving at a slow speed and accidently pull up the hand brake 1 click before I'm fully stopped it pulls up hard, which now only happens on the second click. So re-tension it is. Thanks a lot

I found when I pulled the handbrake up early it made my adjuster skip or something, so my left hand park brake didn't work. This made my brake hold just fine on a down slope, but won't hold uphill without an arm and a half. I think this means the park brake only self energise in 1 direction.

your left hand brake prob needs adjusting, back them both off then completely, then tighten untill they are unmoveable, back off 2 clicks, remember when adjusting that you go oppisite with the adjusters so if you start by going up on one side, you have to go down on the other
