Not being able to compare the car to others with a similar motor, I wanted to ask drivers of the Alloytec 190 V6 if you too (in power mode) experience on the occassion some pretty rough gear changes? By that i mean you feel the whole car jolt when it changes gears.
Although the car is still 15000kms away from a major service I was also wondering whether it was worth getting spark plugs and transmission oil change done at a genuine holden and just pay what they want. The car seems to be using a lot of fuel too. I fear getting an apprentice at my usual mechanic place (kmart) and them messing up something especially with the transmission which would cost me big in the future.
Any thoughts?
thanks!
That's the risk you take, taking it anywhere. Not all Apprentice are bad when they first start out, some do have a lot of experience working on cars. If they stuff it up, they have to pay for it. Simple! I would probably take it to your usual Mechanic, they probably wont charge you an arm and a leg after it.
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
Or do it yourself. Neither of those jobs are particuarly difficult with a socket set and a bit of time
I'd do it all myself if I was me...lol.
Anywhere you go, you're risking the apprentice doing the work.
As for 'rough' changes with power on, my VY does it slightly jerkier than with power switch off. If you're talking really jerky/rough, though then get it seen to. It shouldn't be TOO much rougher than in normal mode.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Autos almost always change like new again after you do the fluid. Very recommended
Thanks guys for your responses.
As mentioned, there is some risk on my part. I will most likely take it to my usual mechanic (Kmart Auto) and ask them to ensure all genuine oils\parts etc. Unfort I cant do this sorta stuff myself as Im not in this field of work.
The car is almost always smooth when power mode is off. When power mode is enabled, the gears change smooth when gearing up, but when the gears go down I really feel the gears changing and slowing the vehicle up especially at the lower speeds. A VE i drive with Alloytec 190 is much smoother. Just wasnt sure why I was getting such hard gear shifts.
When you say change the transmission fluid is that the same as changing the transmission oil?
Fluid/oil same thing. Sorry for any confusion.
There's also a filter that's worth replacing.
There's a how to for changing it.

Thanks for the clarrification
When the time comes, I will definetly get them to change the filter. I really dont feel competant servicing my car, but I do have a good relationship with my mechanic as I give him a lot of business.
Thanks for your help
Yeah, thats interesting to hear. Really not sure why its only happening in power mode. I might just get the transmission oil changed and filters along with its next service (hoping its a job thats easy for my mechanic).
Mine does it aswell when cold, shifting down to 1st from 2nd. Don't know if it's normal but only does it a couple of times when cold.
Mine also shifts hard with power button on. Sometime even get a slight cherp if I'm lucky! Will be giving my trans a
Service next oil change. Anyone know I should buy a replacement kit from?
Price the genuine kits. The filter kit (with gasket) from Gmh nz was cheaper than the Repco one for my vs. Don't over tighten the sump bolts as they can strip.
I must confess to changing my tranny fluid & filter @ 100k along with plugs, coil packs + front O2 sensors & diff oil. That's just me, but the transmission oil was definitely discoloured with an unusual smell. I just reckon 150k is a big ask from any oil.
I used to change it every 20,000 but now only 40,000 mind you I don't cane it or do any towing.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Holden spec every 80k for tranny fluid. My old vs was done at 80 and 170. Changed beautifully at 190 when I sold it.
Did diff oil for the first time at 170k. Diff was so much quieter after, but still whined quite a lot.

Im pretty sure it does up the line pressure, mine shifts much firmer and quicker in PWR mode. OP, yes the car can have some really firm or even rough gear changes in PWR mode. I noticed this even more when i changed my diff ratio to 3.46's, especially on the downshift.
2.5" Single catback, LSD with 3.46 diff gears, Mace Manifold spacer, K&N panel filter ,VCM Dyno tune, RDA slotted and dimpled rotors.
More mods to come

Thanks everyone for your responses.
I guess the most would agree that with Power Mode on the gear changes are naturally more tight and you would generally feel the downshift more (esp on a cold engine and on the lower gears).
Can anyone tell me, for my next due service do I just ask my mechanic to service my gearbox... or do I just simply ask them to change the tranny fluid & filter (or is that the same thing)? I definetly dont want them to mess with diff ratio's (or even reset them), or anything else regarding the programming of the gearbox. I used to have another older car and they tuned the damn thing and they messed with the entire way the gears change n all and couldnt determine which mechanic did it as I rarely drove the car. So yeah, really just want them to change tranny fluid & filter but not sure if at so many kms the car needs some other sort of gearbox service. Has around 140k kms.
And I should let you know its had every logbook service done to date on time.
As far as I know you can't (tune) the 5spd auto in the 190Kw alloytecs - only the 4spd can be tuned. No one should fiddle with it anyway, unless you ask them to. I'd just get them to put a filter kit into the tranny + change the fluid. I also had the diff oil changed. Yours like mine should be a LSD & MUST have the correct oil (has an addative) or you will ruin the diff.
There's no 'servicing' to be done, so to speak, in regards to band adjustment, etc. Therefore, if you ask for a service, you should get fluid, filter and of course pan gasket replaced.
I do mine every 40,000 odd k's, so I just give it the basic service. If you want all the fluid changed, then your mechanic will have to flush the torque converter as well, which isn't a big job but will probably cost more than a basic 'service.'
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Thanks guys for the insight. I dont think my car has LSD but I will get them to confirm that. Im pretty confident that I want them to at least change with all genuine oils and parts the filter\fluids and also what you mentioned about the pan gasket. I dont do many kms so Im not fussed about flushing the torque converter
At least what im experiencing with my transmission is normal ie the tight downshifts when in power mode etc
cheers!
