Yesterday when leaving work, I drove out of the space in "D" then 4 seconds later I had no gears! It was like I put it into neutral while driving. I pushed it to the corner and stopped, shifted up and down through gears and nothing. If i revved it in (D) there was nothing, even reverse didnt work. I turned engine off and called a friend. 30 mins later I tried the same thing, slot into (D) and nothing so I checked under car and couldn't see anything loose or broken.
So friend arrives and trys same thing and nothing to be seen wrong, so i get back in, put it back into (D) and revved it to about 5 rpm and car started moving as normal.... FTW!!! Nursed it back home, upto 60, changed gear fine and seemed normal....
What's going on with my car, it has never done this before. Is it something major or is it a simple fix? Nothing too expensive i hope!
BTW its a 5 speed auto, SV6.
Cheers
How do you do that mate? Thought you couldn't check the fluid level as there is no dip stick?
give it a service, but thats not a good sign
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
Surely there is somewhere to check the Fluid, Surely!!

yes most gearbox dipsticks are close to the firewall on the drivers side, check your trans fluid while the car is running at operating tempreture
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
If theres no dipstick you have to get the transmission fluid temp between 30 and 50 degrees then remove the fill plug off the side of the tranny, engine still running, and top up till its flows back out.
Dont turn the engine off at any time with the fill plug removed.

So its something simple like an oil change? Is it something I can do or better to get an trans machanic to do it? How do you top up the fluid at the same time as draining?
Youre not removing the drain plug, just the fill plug.

And youll be lucky if thats all it is, best bet is get an auto trans specialist to have a look.

Torque converter or Transmission fluid pump... It won't be fluid level that makes you "suddenly" lose gears.
Fluid level will make you slip.

Cheers for the responses....
If there is no hydraulic fluid, which is essentially what auto trans fluid is. there will be no hydraulic pressure, thus the car will not change gears.. just like a crane, not hyrdraulic fluid, no lift...

There was nothing leaking under the car when it happened and checked again when i drove it back home.
Everything sounds expensive, guess i could be expecting a $1000+ bill.....
If lack of fluid or problem with pump, why car still drive afterwards like nothing was wrong? Is this a common problem with auto's?
forgot about the bit you driving it home, wont be fluid loss then.. From the couple of times ive explored the numerous websites i can't recall much about this kind of thing, so from my point of view, not very common.
Hasnt done it since? Could be the start of a problem or the car was having a bad day?! I wouldnt concern myself unless the gearbox started playing up or did it again

As said if the fluid was low enough to result in loss of drive the problem would be constant, not intermittent.

Not started car or even moved it since I parked it. I don't know what to do, wether chance driving it to see if it did it again or leave it until I can afford to get it inspected and repaired? I need my car for work and being this time of the year it's hard to book in anywhere....
Onlyh way to find out if it has problems is to drive it..

ok cheers mate, will try run car around block just incase.... Hopefully it'll be ok just to get me by untill i have funds to get the gearbox checked and serviced and most importantly get me to work otherwise no funds! Will keep you guys posted if I hear any strange noises or anything....
Please do, i would like to know the cause of the problem.. hopefully its just a one off though
