Question VZ SS ute - extra cigarette 12 volt socket in tray

    Hi guys,,
I'm looking at installing a extra 12 volt socket into the tray of my ute, using the rear drivers side taillight compartment to mount it. Now iv read that other people have gone to massive efforts to run write from there all the way through the fuel tub then into the cab, then either piggy back to cigarette lighter or go all the way to the battery.

So what iam looking at doing which I would like advice on is running my positive off the 12v socket to the taillight parker wire, so in turn the unit will only work when the parkers are on. Now that doesn't bother me I can live with that, but can anyone please tell me if that is going to be safe and if my method will work without issue I will be placing a 15 amp fuse inline for safety.

Iam doing this as I'm putting in a small air compressor(like a ball pump/tyre pump) to pump up my polyair airbags in my springs just to make life easier, so not going to be used constantly...

I wouldn't be to sure about drawing such an amperage from the park light wiring. Especially for an air compressor as mentioned due to the higher amp they draw upon initial start up.

It would be extra work, but you can't beat the safety from running a wire from the battery to the tub/tray area. I would also recommend atleast 5mm wire to cope with the slight voltage drop over such a length.

it would be best to run some wire under the car.yes a fuse. even put the wire in convolt tubeing and zip tied .. you might have a grommet in the tray for your entry point.as stated a hi draw device needs a good size power supply(wire)::::

if you want to run a compressor there is no way it would work if you try to run it off the parklight circuit as it would blow the fuse under the dash straight away. best option is to run 5mm or 6mm twin staight to the battery, you can remove the side panels in the tray on the drivers side then follow where the tail light harness goes into the cabin, then just run the cable under the drivers sill cover then out through the clutch grommit on the firewall.

Thankyou very muchly for your input!! I shall be running a wire down the side wiring harness and to the battery.. seems the safest and best way to do this.!!
